This was an initial release issue with the chipset, from my understanding nearly all apps are compatible, I've yet to have any issues with my 11" ipad pro with the M1.

Note, the biggest down side for me on the air is no face id

Personally I prefer fingerprint to face id. Had an m1 ipad pro and switched to ipad air recently. No more turning ipads left and right to unlock with my face
