First movie was an absolute masterpiece of a standalone movie. Very difficult to make a 2 hour movie that explains at the time it was made about 4-5 seasons but they pulled it off.

The second movie was awful

First movie was an absolute masterpiece of a standalone movie. Very difficult to make a 2 hour movie that explains at the time it was made about 4-5 seasons but they pulled it off.

The second movie was awful

Unless they have recently updated the streaming version, the original series looks pretty bad via streaming. X-files is often dark, and the streaming version looked gray when it should be black, and suffered from a lot of crush as well.
For anyone who wants to see the X-files look better than they've ever seen it before (and sound better too) I suggest paying a little extra to get it on bluray.

The iTunes version looks very clean, with plenty of detail and contrast. Don't know for the Vudu version. The bluray is surely better, but it's not a "little" more if you wait for a digital sale. It regularly hits $49.99, and I got it a couple years ago for $29.99 on iTunes, including seasons 10-11. That's a fraction of the cost of the bluray, and I find series way easier to watch on digital than disc.

I also got it for $30 on iTunes. Actually I swear it was $25 but I hesitated cause it was still on Netflix at the time. Then I decided to go for it but it had gone up to $30. I almost refused to spend the extra $5 thinking I'll wait till it goes back to $25. It hasn't been less than $50 since.

The picture quality looks great most of the time. Really sharp and detailed. Related to this post actually the series now looks better streaming than the first movie. I watched the movie on HBO Max between seasons and it was rather surprising to see the drop in picture detail.

If the situation hasn't changed recently, these movies are out of print on BD and command serious money. I don't believe we'll ever get them on UHD since Disney now controls the X-Files.

The second movie was made more or less as a standalone, self-contained story like the show's regular monster-of-the-week cases. Supposedly an unproduced screenplay leftover from the show's early days. I get why some were unhappy the second movie went in that direction but it's a fine X-Files story on its own merits.
