iPads can use up to 45w and the iPhone 30w on an MFI-certified (or Apple oem) charger.
In short: yes it's overkill but at this price it's not bad — also, just like when ordering ice cream, you can never really go too big, right?
If you have a laptop, then it's a killer deal.
If you have a non-Apple laptop, also a killer deal because the Apple chargers are better than most that ship from dell, Lenovo, Samsung, etc.
That being said, the chargers from Anker are pretty sexy. I'd look at the 735 which can do your phone, watch and iPad at the same time. A good charger for traveling.

What about the 736 that's 25% off right now? Is it really big and heavy compared to 735?
No, there are very reliable third party options from Anker, or Best Buy's Insignia. They are typically cheaper but use the same standards that Apple uses for USB C charging. Apple charges a premium for their brand.
In fact the cheaper third party options can often land you higher power and more ports for the same price. Look at deals on here from Anker and UGREEN.

There's more versatile or affordable third party options from reliable brands, but this is a good price if you must have Apple.
Normally I'd agree with you, but the Apple chargers hold up a lot longer than Anker / Aukey (haven't tried ugreen yet). I'm assuming it's because they are one port chargers vs those other brands that have 2-3 ports charging different devices and probably because most people use this to charge their laptop vs a multitude of devices.
Edit: All anecdotal obviously; I've had 2 Ankers fail on me, but my MBA charger from 2014 go the distance (same with my Google Nexus / Pixel chargers)

I've had 3 Apple chargers fail in the past decade, but in 8 years, zero Anker failures. I love my Apple products but I do not feel their accessory pricing matches their build quality.
Apple chargers are inferior design even if you feel like it will last you a long time. This charger is objectively less travel-friendly than Anker or UGREEN designs in size alone, not even getting into ports. I'd rather buy an Anker charger every 3 years than live with a fat single port Apple charger for 5 until my next Mac purchase gives me another fat single port brick.

Ah, Anker! The same company that has those Eufy webcams that spy on you and collect your facial ID data on their cloud server when they explicitly say "Local storage only! Privacy! No cloud!"

If you buy Anker, you're supporting a company that cares nothing for your privacy (through their Eufy line of security cameras).
