If your data is that vital then it's a "seatbelt rule" to save it in multiple storage devices or even cloud storage.

Will last a lifetime if stored correctly, cool dry place not humid etc etc.

can i hot plug to my android phone via usb c to transfer my photo and video clips on the road?

Yes, I don't see why not, that's the exact purpose of these things😊

Phone storage isn't typically big enough so photos/vids are transferred to a storage media like this, then transferred again to a PC/Mac to be worked on.

Yes it's a big flash drive basically. use as needed then store it.

That's actually a good question, in a way. Direct answer would be no, because there is no way to do that (add a power supply into the external drive). The drive would run off the device it connects into.

However, the better question is, is your phone able to supply not the correct amount of power, but does it have the compatible power feed (volts) to it? Otherwise, it'll short out. So I would be hesitant to attempt it till you/we get an answer or find it. (Most phones should probably port at the same voltage. At least, most of the newer smart phones.)

I'm not one who really knows much about electricity and stuff. So take all that with a grain of salt. However, when I had a custom stereo installed in my car(s) over the years, the guy told me (in short) I could only run flash drives. The connections weren't built to carry enough power to portable hard drives and I'd fry the stereo if I tried. That was 10 years ago though. Maybe the size and power-hunger of these (especially this small drive) is a lot less than back then?

Editing to add about the actual transferring of files:
That might depend on your phone/OS. For example, on Samsung and Windows based Operating Systems, you simply find your "My Files" folder (generally in a Samsung collection or amongst your general apps on Windows OS phones) and after clicking in there, you can "Copy" the individual folders you want (like the "DCIM" folder where your pictures should be). Then follow the root directory up (looking at a folder icon with a small triangular arrow pointing right toward the Internal Storage folder) till you can see the new drive and "Paste" them over on there. (There is no click and dragging way, as far as I know.) I'm sure it's pretty similar for most Androids (say a Google Pixel or anything like that.) However, I'm not sure if Apple allows you to do something similar though. I, myself, am not familiar enough with those Operating Systems. So much of that seems Cloud based.
