A few months ago I made my first purchase from this website, based off glowing reviews from the commenters. Oddly enough, my first purchase was a bad hard drive! (Or maybe not odd and people here are just getting really lucky?) Inserting the hard drive just kept rebooting my system, and they told me to return it. The return process was really easy, however, and they really stood by their product. I felt confident enough that I got another hard drive after that incident and the new one has been working flawlessly.

I just ordered a 16 TB WD UltraStar from ServerPartDeals last week for $179, my first purchase ever from them. Made sure to run a gamut of tests on it via HDD Sentinel, everything passed. Drive works great! Using it to store ZFS snapshots of my TrueNas box until I can get a legit second backup pool setup, successfully copied 6TBs over to it without any issues.

Definitely a great site, but make sure you're properly testing your drives before relying on them to save your data! HDD Sentinel is a fantastic Windows testing and monitoring app for HDDs and SSDs and there is a 40% off deal running currently.

I have been looking at this vendor for a few months now, after reading about them on another SD thread. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, though.

My shucked WD 12TB disks are all getting full.


Not quite sure why the seller refurb'd units are more expensive than the Mfr Recert drives, and come with only 30 day warranty vs. 2 years for the Mfr recert.

This is the X18 drive, is the X20 a better choice? I am not sure what the different X levels are.

Don't know who downvoted your comment, but I concur. Also got 12TB a couple of months back and mine's also very noisy, which is OK as it is in a NAS in a closet where I can't hear it.

scruntiny is a strict test based on smart values . I only use the base test.

HD drive sentinel is what you want for windows and if you get a synology it will inform you of errors through their software.

I run two 24 bay super micro enterprise cases over unraid and never had one drive fail or give me an error.

Most drives will die within the first month after being full written too.

I have had 3 drives die from either bad shipping or bad from the factory within the first 72 hours of being written too on my chia crypto farm
but these were on my 3x 45bay full loaded supermicro jbods farming chia
i manage about 2.5PiB right now with no issues. Your best investment is to buy a UPS from antec cyberpower when they go on sale. Any type of trip or sudden shutdowns will hurt your drives or data being transferred at the time

Just make sure you plan for parity and you will be good to go for many years using a consumer nas or custom built. I have left my servers on for over 2 years with no issues , constantly reading and some writing, rebuilding parity to make the array larger in unraid . No issues

too many likes....not sure why? I don't think its a good deal as I would prefer to have 5-7 years of warranty on my array of disk.... piece of mind.

I'll buy used and recert drives when they're literally less than half the price of new.
Why? Gotta buy at least 2 for mirroring.

I'd also recommended 'stressing' drives; new or used. HDDs are not like SSDs, so giving them a 'shakedown' doesn't implicitly and verifiably subtract from their lifespan. It will, however, often 'illuminate' issues with the drive, that otherwise may not pop up for months-years.

Same. I would never buy a Seagate drive for anything I want to keep. I only use Seagate for PS3/4 or game drive.

When I popped a 16tb drive into my old USB drive reader it couldn't recognize it. What external enclosures are you all using to test the drives before putting them into service in a nas?

Windows storage spaces does most of not all of the useful things in the filesystem that the free NAD software can do.

Well said. As a home user it's not like I lose business or money if I fall below 99.99% uptime. Even spending a day or two recovering really isn't a big deal under normal circumstances. If I permanently lose my data I'm in a whole lot of trouble though.

so when are you going to make us hard drives that don't fail within 3-5 yrs?
B/c up to now, ALL HDD manufacturer have drives that failed within minutes, not even years.
