In 1964, I paid $259.00 for my cherry with that beautiful yellow-gold plush thermometer case. I'd buy it all over again at 10x that amount. Love them SGs!
I guess I'm the opposite. I've had a couple Gibson Sg's and found them to be dull in sound and playing. 🥴
Ironically one of my favorite guitars I own is an ESP Viper.
I grabbed a Gibson SG because my favorite show guitar was a LTD Viper. When that band broke up I let my singer steal that SG, because I was more than willing to let that guitar go fror free than have to deal with that asshole anymore. The Viper, i'd fight over. The SG? Ehh, whatever.
I got to see 2 of my favorite bands in concert together when I was a kid, AC/DC and Frank Marino/Mahogany Rush, and remember how cool I thought they looked with their Gibson SG Cherry guitars!

i had this for about 10 years and it didnt sound great to me compared to my other (cheaper guitars) i finally sold it recently for 1500, and i got a ltd ec 256 used for 299 and i love the sound and feel better than i ever did with my gibson. The ltd 1000 is next for me. that must be a fantastic guitar.

$259 in 1964 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $2,499.52
You overpaid 😉
Love SGs. Fav guitar ever was a white fujigen epiphone. Have played classics, standards, 61 reissues, and currently play an 05 platinum.

Electric guitars were still kinda "new" in 1964 and the SG only came around in 1961. I guess it would be like buying a personal computer in the early 80s for $3,000
Guaranteed these shipped with hard cases from the factory and these cheap b--ches from American musical are selling them separately to make a buck.
Nope, Gibson ships with soft shell case (they ARE pretty nice but still). Need to move up to the '61 model to get the hard case.
Honestly, if any large scale official Gibson retailer was actually doing this practice, there would be a tremendous uproar and they'd be out of business in a hurry.
edit - for all you LP lovers, there is a 400NOW coupon on a 50s standard with AAA Bourbon Burst top bringing it down to $2499.
I've tried to like SGs but even a deluxe would not cut it, sounds like it runs on weak batteries. Over the last 15 to 20 years the only guitar I haven't let go is my PRS custom. Very versatile and sounds great for whatever you wanna play on it. At this point, I've stopped searching for the right one because once it is worn it plays even better. So yeah, if you're looking to get a lifetime partner, give PRS custom a try.
