Is it even smart buying an outlet that's not UL listed?

you didn't need to hurry - it's been bobbing between $12 and $16 for the last six months.

Anyone else realize American sockets look like a shock emoji?

I've seen some energy-saving ad which specifically used that similarity. They also flipped ground connector to make thing smile (after you buy...)

If half your outlet doesn't work, there's a good chance it's controlled by a light switch. Do you happen to have one in that room or near the room (say, right next to the entryway into the room) that doesn't seem to do anything? Plug something in the non-working outlet and see if it switches on/off with the light switch.
Thanks, not the case this time though. I refinished my whole basement with my dad and we did all the electrical ourselves, no secret switches. It's a weird short where if I plug anything into it anything on the breaker won't work. I should turn the breaker off and take it out and tinker but I'd love to just buy one of these gizmos instead.

There's a recess in the back of the box, bro. It allows the outlet to rest "flush" against the wall (with no gap or space). Most everyone else gets it - but you. This isn't brain surgery and I'm not getting paid to write technical listings for Slickdeals… or the Chinese company that designed this damn outlet. I'm a dude that likes to post deals on SD and help other dudes that like to save money. So, if you don't like the way I post or describe deals, then please go and post your own or just block me - you won't have to put up with any more of my deal titles.

Goodnight!
You might be right.

When I tell a customer I'm going to install recessed lighting, and then I install a $10 boob-light instead of the can-lights they were expecting, I can say "but there's a recess on the back, here where the wiring/insulation is, I'll take it off the ceiling, turn it around, and show you!"

Or like the afore mentioned recessed outlet. Those things aren't cheap. I can tell a customer who wants one for an appliance or TV that I can do it, then just install the $0.60 standard receptacle and plate. If they say anything, I can just unscrew the plate and point out the recess in the back that is meant to sit over flanges on old-work boxes.

I'm sure I've been using the word wrong... Thanks for your education on the matter.

No, I am saying that you are the one willingly contributing towards that salary. Because, you know, you are not getting anything from UL if something happens to listed device anyway. Great position to be in, collect money and have no responsibility...
That is a dumb angle to play.
Considering UL is a non profit, their executives make reasonable pay for their work.

I think everyone here should read about what UL and CE(EU area) are about.

Sure, a power plug that has been certified is more expensive, but what you do get is a product that has been designed with quality/longevity/safety in mind. Don't expect any of this from a drop-ship company on Amazon.

I actually want something like this for my garage, but it's more of a metal box that sticks out from the wall.

I just want a safe one. Amy suggested brands or models?

I've had one for several months now. One side holds a smart plug that runs the bathroom heater every day. The USB runs the security camera 24-7. And I run the vacuum cleaner and carpet shampooer off the other outlets as needed. Been very happy with it.

Welp, when you have to describe an electrical contracting job in a specific Slickdeals title character limit, then maybe it would be okay. In the future, I'll be sure to consult with you on multi outlet deals with recessed backs. Rolleyes

UL LLC is a for-profit. Their parent UL inc. is a non-profit, and overall that sounds as a tax optimization scheme.
CE is an absolute opposite of UL and NRTL with the compliance assured by manufacturer, and not by a private law company.

if you get one that is not recessed, you can take the plate cover off, adjust the outlet in (breaker off suggested) and use this one as the cover. I did and it looks pretty flush.

Newer wall outlets to do not have a center screw. I have to use velcro.

Could this catch fire or is it suitably certified?
Edit: damn I did not read this thread when I posted this. Looks like the thread is already on fire on this very subject. I do value safety certifications so this is a hard pass for me. Just not worth the risk.
There's too much fuss in this thread about UL. This is etl certified. And is a Well known certification. ETL does not create their own standards for certification, but only makes sure that products meet the standards created by UL.

Basically, ul makes the standards , test and certifies . Etl test and certified based on what the UL writes .

If you use this for charging phones/ tablets i highly doubt you would be having any problems . I wouldn't be plugging in toaster ovens, heaters or ac units in to this.
