When I tell a customer I'm going to install recessed lighting, and then I install a $10 boob-light instead of the can-lights they were expecting, I can say "but there's a recess on the back, here where the wiring/insulation is, I'll take it off the ceiling, turn it around, and show you!"
Or like the afore mentioned recessed outlet. Those things aren't cheap. I can tell a customer who wants one for an appliance or TV that I can do it, then just install the $0.60 standard receptacle and plate. If they say anything, I can just unscrew the plate and point out the recess in the back that is meant to sit over flanges on old-work boxes.
I'm sure I've been using the word wrong... Thanks for your education on the matter.
Considering UL is a non profit, their executives make reasonable pay for their work.

Sure, a power plug that has been certified is more expensive, but what you do get is a product that has been designed with quality/longevity/safety in mind. Don't expect any of this from a drop-ship company on Amazon.

CE is an absolute opposite of UL and NRTL with the compliance assured by manufacturer, and not by a private law company.

Edit: damn I did not read this thread when I posted this. Looks like the thread is already on fire on this very subject. I do value safety certifications so this is a hard pass for me. Just not worth the risk.
Basically, ul makes the standards , test and certifies . Etl test and certified based on what the UL writes .
If you use this for charging phones/ tablets i highly doubt you would be having any problems . I wouldn't be plugging in toaster ovens, heaters or ac units in to this.
