IMO this is a better *deal* than the M2 Air for most users. That said I bought this for $750 from BBY new more than a year ago.

But that goes against every consumer instinct I possess! My laptop MUST have capabilities I will never need or use.

The longer battery life and faster SSD speeds at 256GB of the M1 make it an interesting argument

SSD claim is click bait for YouTubers. There is no difference real world. This is essentially the same argument Intel fans made against SoC machines early on.

Unless you're a tech YouTuber running benchmarks, the SSD is the same but the M2 is faster, better screen, better form factor, better speakers, better camera, and MagSafe. So much real world value over this for $200.

For me, no notch + 100 more nits on the m2 is more important than the ssd performance.

The SSD of m1 air or m2 air is probably more of a talking point than much of a performance hit in reality. These are already very fast drives and you're probably not going to be spending all day copying files on a 8gb/256gb m1 air otherwise this isn't the right laptop in the first place and defeats the purpose of the bargain price. Same thing with the battery life - both of these last a long time and does it really matter if you get 10 hrs vs 11? Just my 2c.

Also if you want to maximize battery life, then you probably put the laptop in low power mode (or auto) in settings which significantly slows it down much more than the m1/m2 SSD difference when not plugged in.

I have the M1 Pro 14" and guys the notch is really bad not from looking at the screen perspective but because it hides applications behind it and there is not way to see them without connecting to the external monitor.

great laptop at a great price. you don't need to spend more unless you just really want some of the niceties on the newer model.
