My biggest gripe is that the tread basically doesn't exist. I can't wear them if it's rained because I'll die by slipping. Not the most rugged either, tend to rip since the fabric is so thin.

I was going to comment on my near death experience wearing similar Adidas shoes with this tread after it rained.

My finding is, although "sporty", the shoes make a trade off for comfort and slip-on convenience: lack of support.
Anything more than a walk or light jog risks rolling/twisting of the ankle as there are no laces or lateral support. It may be obvious to some people but this is the first time using this type of shoe.
I have difficulty tying laces so the slip-on was the main feature for me.

I had the same exact experience with a similar shoe. Very comfortable, but poor durability and non-existent wet traction.
As comfortable as these are, I will never buy shoes with this style/material of outsole. It's just too dangerous.

how are they to wear without socks?

So...they're basically just as good as slippers 😅
These are the most comfortable shoes I've ran across.
They're stylish enough to wear out around town, and so easy to just slip on and off (perfect for airport travel in this regard - almost as convenient as flipflops).
I don't recommend heavy running in these since they're just slip-ons, but I do wear my to the gym to lift daily and I do a leisurely half mile run as part of my warm up and have no issues doing that.
Like others have said, they have no traction and you're likely to slip especially if the floor is wet.
The worst thing about them is how uncomfortable they are. They are way too tight on my feet and it feels like I'm cutting off my blood circulation.
Anyone with wide or larger feet should absolutely avoid this shoe.
It's just not very practical for anything but it can look nice.
