Folks - For an OS drive you won't be able to tell the difference between this and another that is 5000 or 7000 MB/s. This is 7 times faster than traditional SSDs which are around 500MB/s and still can barely tell the difference for boot drive between those unless you use a stop watch. You really need to be doing massive 4K editing and even then chances are the bottleneck will be in other areas. Source: I worked for several years in the OS building team of a company whose OS you are probably using.
That said there is the usual conundrum of someday being able to use the extra 1500 to 3500MB/s some day for an extra $20 to 50 but chances are by then it will make more sense to go with PCIe5 drives.
Misinformation!
I have the 1tb version of this and It's been working just fine as an OS drive. Desktop in seconds, at game menu in less than a minute from shutdown to steam start-up and finally launching the game.

Good price, but slow for a PCIe 4 drive. No dram, and QLC. Not good for an OS drive.
Is it good for DIY external SSD? I thought SSDs are saver than the traditional hard drives because they have no moving parts, but by reading many of the reviews, SSD drives could also fail.

What would you recommend for an OS drive that doesn't cost a lot more?
You could use a cheap drive like this Kingston but depending on how you use your computer it might crap out in a year or two. Basically for best endurance you want TLC chips and for best performance you want DRAM. At current prices you'll pay $160 for a good 2TB NVMe PCIe 4 drive that is TLC and has DRAM. Personally I would go with a Samsung 980 Pro but there are other good drives out there too.

What do you think about 2TB PNY CS3040 XLR8 ?
Looks good. I like PNY and I'd buy that drive.
