Dell still ranks third in number of PCs (desktop plus laptop) shipped worldwide with about 19% market share, after Lenovo and HP (year end 2022). Dell's share of the leased PC market is even larger. Nearly 60% of Dell Technologies, Inc. revenue comes from its Client Solutions Group, with most of the remainder coming from their Infrastructure Solutions Group. The bulk of this hardware is supplied on lease terms.

So Dell turns over millions of leased PCs every year. They've been selling off-lease hardware since the late nineties (if not earlier), offering these ever changing promotions as inventory fluctuates.

I think these "deals" are just being noticed and posted more frequently recently by slickdealers, although increased deal frequency may also be part of the picture.

I ordered a Latitude 5400 condition B 3 weeks ago ($280). It arrived perfect. No scratches or dents. Battery report shows 77% battery capacity. Slapped on an extra 16GB of ram and updated to Win11Pro. I'm a happy camper.

When I opened mine up, I did a thorough cleaning of the fan and heat sinks with a brush and blower. There was a lot of dust balls. It's been running quiet and no heat issues so far.

I found a replacement 68Wh battery on eBay. Listing states that it's OEM and brand new. Let's see when it arrives.

I ended up taking apart the fan and cleaning it out properly. Originally I just used canned air but there was still a lot of dust buildup inside the fan.

I completely agree... I use a shop vac and compressed air combo as the initial clean, then electronic cleaner spray and repaste.

I've bought three of the recent Latitude deals over the last year, all grade A ranked.

The first was a 7390. The keyboard wasn't registering some key presses so I contacted support. They offered a replacement keyboard but I opted for a refund instead. Pretty painless interaction.

The second purchase was a 7490. I removed the giant sticker covering the lid. Only a few minor scratches underneath. IMHO, a lightly marred original finish looks better than a flat black sticker. I upgraded the SSD and ram with some spares I had lying around. After opening it up I noticed some liquid damage/corrosion on one of the USB ports. Cleaned it up with some alcohol. Works without issue.

I sold the 7490 to a friend, who needed it for school, and bought a 7400 2 in 1. It came in near perfect condition. Just some light scratches around the USB-C ports. Holding on to this one. Installed Fedora. Has been working great so far!

All of the batteries have shown "Excellent" condition in the BIOS. What is everyone using to get a percentage rating?

Overall I've been happy with my Dell refurbished purchases. Probably could have found cheaper stuff on EBay but preferred to go the refurbished route. They do come with a warranty, albeit a short one.

Go in the BIOS and turn off Intel Turboboost and it will run quieter and cooler.

Did you contact dellrefurbished? I recieved laptops with bad batteries twice from them and both times it was fairly painless to convince them the battery was bad and they sent me a replacement. (granted I have no issue replacing the battery myself) One time it took a couple days and the other was closer to a week (they didn't have a battery in stock to send me) While I would prefer having no issues, overall I am pretty satisfied with the company and wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again.

I open a command prompt with Admin privileges, then run ... powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html"

It creates an html file report. It'll show the Design Capacity and the Full Charge Capacity.

Kind of a meh CPU in these. I'd probably go for the 1080p/8GB/256SSD for $190 after code and throw linux on it as a basic beater.
