Why even buy RDNA2 cards? Just wait couple of months on RDNA3 prices to go down

I guess some people would buy the 6950 for this price, but I wouldn't understand it so much because the 7900XT prices fell to $799 already. Check Microcenter and Amazon. I'm almost thinking those prices wont stay that high for long as well since the 7900XT cards are readily available. It really depends on the individual situation, but I do not blame anyone for holding out as long as possible because these video card prices have been elevated without mercy for the consumer for far too long.

I could think of a couple reasons off the top of my head:

1. No one, including you, can predict the future, specifically market pricing for RDNA3 cards, especially with constant inflation, supply/demand, and a growing recession.

2. Some people prefer purchasing a NIB GPU at a discounted price, even if it's "older technology", because to them it's still an upgrade from what they have currently.

3. Lastly, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Will ChatGPT gobble up all GPUs again and create a new market chaos?

I think it's reasonably clear the only way is down given the market condition, 7000 series price drop, death of proof-of-work crypto, and shift to cloud (or commercial gpu) for inference/ML training. Inflation is Nvidia/AMD's talking point and they actually mean you pay for the inflation of their profit margins. May make sense to buy more of these if one owns Nvidia/AMD stock Wink

Different kind of chips. Also, AMD doesn't make great AI chips like Nvida, so you are good if u want AMD card

Good if you want an AMD card...until one of the other GPU-mined alt coins once again becomes clearly profitable at typical power costs. And then all bets are off.

Proof of work crypto never died. It just became much less profitable without ethereum. Lots of people out there who are still doing a lot of mining with a lot of gpus. And several coins have gained a lot of ground toward achieving broader profitability since the crash, still not "no-brainer" profitable in most places, like ethereum was before, depending on how cheap you can get power, but if one day that changes for one of the coins, then you could see this situation reverse over night once again.

Yea it's a metaphor but for the sake of slick gpu deals, PoW should stay ded forever. It's a giant waste of time and resource which should have been put to better use e.g. let normal people buy cheaper gpu to enjoy 4k games.

Maybe, sort of. Or maybe not.

Don't get me wrong—personally, I definitely empathize with the desire for reasonably priced high-end gaming GPUs. However, with that said, I don't think it's entirely clear to what extent the blame for the situation we saw should be attributed primarily cryptocurrency mining alone. I think it's fair to say that the combination of the pandemic caused supply chain shortages coupled with the increased demand brought about by an extremely sudden, no warning, global "working from home" situation, combined with the common knowledge that using the cards for Ethereum mining could be very profitable—all of these factors came together to drive the prices up beyond reason and out of reach of most people, not doubt.

But I think it's still up in the air as to what proportion of blame, relative to one another, that each factor alone truly bears responsibility for. For example, consider that mining had already been highly profitable for a long time, and yet it never resulted in such big issue until the pandemic went into full effect. Another thing to consider is that when used for mining, cards from AMD always tended to be significantly more profitable at carrying out the task than were cards from NVIDIA (and that's even before/without the additional steps that NVIDIA would go on to take in the effort to even further handicap most of the cards they would be manufacturing). And yet, the increase in pricing, demand, and lack of availability all seemed to be rather uniformly effected across both AMD and NVIDIA, where if anything NVIDIA cards may have been effected even slightly worse, whereas if the problems were being cause entirely due to the profitability of mining it would have been logical for AMD cards to have been effected more so than NVIDIA cards. Though if the increased demand and supply chain shortages were actually the primary source of the issues, then we might expect that they'd have all been more uniformly affected, similar to what we observed. Finally, the prices had already started to return to normal before Ethereum stopped proof of work, and while there was a crash in the aftermath which caused prices to drop, they still haven't fully recovered
