i can confirm that the code didn't work previously (yes, even when it was displayed on the product pages).
but just today i received an email from jomashop advertising the code and i thought i would try it again. when adding a pair of oakley sunglasses whose corresponding product page said "sun40" was applicable, the sunglasses were added to my cart with the discount code already applied, the discounted amount listed, and reflected in the cart total.
