With regards to Verbatim being a brand that young folks are not aware of…
those same folks have also never heard of a little company called IBM. Not criticizing young folks—I'm just feeling old.

TLDR; Is there something inherently wrong with USBC design for data?

I have had two laptops, one Portable monitor and 6 generic USBC hubs like this and they all have data connection issues. M bringing this up because I think they are so made at the same Shenzhen factory (and I've seen hundreds of them at CES all with identical aluminum body.)

USBC hub issues:
All of my 6 USBC hubs (mostly from amazon and 2 from eBay) disconnect and reconnect a lot. Pretty frustrating to get up in the morning and keyboard light isn't on and it isn't working. (I leave my laptop on all night, I'm pretty sure it goes to sleep). Touching keyboard or mouse also does not wake up the laptop so I have to pry it open push the button and close it every morning. No issue with HDMI with any of them but data and USBC issues. I keep buying a new one and tossing old ones in the drawer. I think it may be power issue with the USB port but a Lenovo and a Dell laptop have the same issue? Odd.

Portable Monitor usbc issue:

The USBC cable portable monitor disconnects with slightest movement. It's getting pretty bad now. I have baby'd it and it has barely moved since I bought it and didn't have this issue it slowly developed.

Portable Monitor usbc issue with Samsung Dex or other phones:

Phone recognizes external monitor about 50% of the time now. Sometimes goes into Dex sometimes duplicates the screen.

Samsung Dex now opens as logged in wihout any permissions asked on the phone screen! Wtf?

USBC keeps reconnecting: when I walk away from my laptop at the end of the day and turn off the monitor, about 30 minutes later windows laptop keeps making ding dong sound like I have connected and disconnected a USB device. This was happening with my old work laptop, Lenovo and my new personal Dell laptop too. It's very frustrating having to turn on the computer to put it on silent to stop the continuous ding dong and next day turning the speaker back on. It seems like some green feature kicks in and shuts down the USB ports and then turns it back on 5 seconds later and keeps doing this every 10 minutes. Could be windows issue or hub issue.

one USBC hub with Micro SD slot, burned my Microsd. It literally turned so hot I pulled the Microsd out and it burnt my finger and of course all our underwater pool pictures and videos were fried.

Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas how I can fix things. I'm worried about buying this , although it's sort of name brand.

IBM? Isn't that when you get frequent bloating and diarrhea?

Are any of the hubs you tried name-brand or are all no-name amazon dropshipped stuff? As i said earlier in the thread I had frequent disconnection problems when I was trying cheap no-name hubs; I eventually bought an anker 5-in-1 and now have zero issues running all my peripherals, ethernet, etc off the same hub. See if you can snag a used name-brand one for cheap and see if it fixes your issues. As for the monitor, it sounds to me like a cable issue. USB-C cables can be super, super finicky when you're running data through them, so if the cable is loose and/or gets jostled it can cause flickering or disconnects. Then again, that might just be a hub issue too

If I remember correctly, verbatim was a branch from Mitsubishi. It is big in optical disk, quite relevant till mid 2010s. Still can be found today in staples or office Depot when you are looking for DVD burn disks.

Seems like the HDMI does do 60Hz at 4K

Did you try it?

I got the anker 5xx with 2 hdmi and verbatium with 1 hdmi. The charger need to have the power rating, otherwise they would act funny.

But you dont need to input power if you are only using for low power (mouse, keyboard, monitors). If you need passthrough or read hdd, then consider supplying the recommended power supply.

I returned Anker (got hp one from employer), kept verbatium for single monitor. In both cases, I powered laptops with separate power supply and no more issues with monitors.

So I'm assuming computer manufacturers are moving away from USB-A and making everything USB-C these days? Getting harder to find normal USB hubs 😡

If u don't need hdmi@60 which this one is iffy on, the monoprice is a better option with Ethernet and full 100watt passthru for a couple $ more.

Verbatim was big in the 5 1/4 inch floppy's along with 3M. I bought many boxes once upon a time. My Tandy 1000 had dual floppy drives so I could boot to dos without swapping disks.
Wait. That's the same Verbatim we are talking about?

Just a heads up. I have the 7 in 1 dock which only difference is it has a usb-c data port. Speed tests using my external ssd show while connected to the hub, my transfer speeds are cut in half. Plugging my ssd directly into the usb-c port on my computer (M1 mac mini) my read/write speeds are approx 750 Mb/s each. Using the same cable plugged into the docking hub, my read/write speeds are cut down to approx 350 Mb/s. I get the same results if I use a usb c to usb A adapter and plug into either of one of the two hubs usb (3.0) ports.
Just a heads up.....
1) The USB ports on this hub (6 in 1) have transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps, which is twice the speed of your 7 in 1 hub.
2) The USB version on this 6-in-1 is USB 3.1 gen 2, which is far better than your USB 3.0
3) When you transfer files, the speed also depends on the file size (larger file get more stable and faster transfer speeds) and how many ports on the hub you are using at the same time. For example, if you are using HDMI and also connects other USB ports on the hub, the transfer speed is definitely slower than directly connecting to the port on your computer...

It requires displayport 1.4.. Maybe all 10+ your laptops are too old and have only displayport 1.2

About 15 years ago I was using Verbatim CD-R discs and USB thumb drives, all worked great. Never had anything fail. Around 2005-2009. Maybe since then they've gone down the tubes? Sad if true, they made good quality products
