I have had 8 Seagate 16TB exos drives in my Synology nas for over 2 years with no issues. I have had 2 8TB WD Reds previously fail on me. I also had a cheapo Seagate fail on me many moons ago. If you ask around enough you will find people who have had bad experience (and good experiences) with both brands.

This is the best way to tell what drives work best.

Yeah I was going to ask.. I've had really bad experiences with Seagate in the past. Multiple disk failures and such. It's the primary reason I switched to WD for everything. Have they improved at all?

This is a huge drive. My only concern is its a lot of data to lose if it craps out. I would have to have two. One for backup.

That's right. If you are expanding storage you should buy drives in pairs or triples. One backup, one off-site backup (as an onsite backup doesn't save you from fire, flood or theft).

It of course depends how important your data is to you.

I gave up on Seagate. I've had drive failures on both shucked and regular drives. And I've had noise issues with all of them. They either were just loud all the time or worse they had horrible write/read noises and parking head noises that are really annoying. While my WD drives are whisper quiet and more reliable. I've had a total of about 5 Seagate drives on my NAS, only one still working but loud and annoying. Meanwhile my other 4 WD drives are completely fine and quiet (3 shucked and one WD Red). This is over a period of about 5-6 years.

I bought 4 18TB Exos for my Synology NAS running 24/7 last August and haven't had any issues. They have been running great. I also bought a refurbished 18TB Exos for my personal PC as additional storage and haven't had any issues.

These are enterprise drives. I am guessing many of you don't understand the difference. For at home use on NAS solutions these things can last 10+ years. I have 12 10TB Exos drives in use for the past 5 years that just keep humming along. WD Reds may be a little quieter, but the 10s and 14s are not loud at all. In my Synology in a room with tile floors, they aren't noticeable from 6 feet.

This is a killer deal on drives of this size.

as most people are stating, I've had horrible experience with seagate. I've used all brands (WD, Toshiba, etc) from all of the ones I have used, ONLY the seagates failed (2 to be exact from 10 to 15 HD) I thought the first one was a fluke. Come the second one, I was pissed off losing my data (not too important but still annoying)

I wouldn't trust ShitGate with 2 Bytes of my data - A 0 or a 1.
We also don't trust random SDers who don't know the difference of bits and bytes.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted, but I worked in a highish volume computer repair shop for a few years. We had a dedicated data recovery engineer that absolutely loathed anything from Seagate.

One time we did an internal audit of drive brands that we received for data recovery for like 6 months. I don't recall the exact figures since its been a few year, but seagate was like 3 or 4x more failures compared to all other mfgs. Obviously we don't know the size of hardware out in the wild but sort of telling from our perspective.

From the repair side I anecdotally saw seagate HDDs failures more than other brand of drives that came thru the shop. We would intake somewhere between 10-20 machines a day minimum.

1 exception was the WD Green HDDs, those were pretty junky too from what he would tell us.

To be fair, there's only 10 types of people. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
