I bought one a few years ago. Mine did not smell funny though. The cats love it & use it every day. After years of use, it's still holding up fairly well. The base is heavy & study which helps keeping it from flipping over. One of our cats even jumps on top & it has never fallen. Definitely a recommended buy, if you have cats.

This is great, I got it last time it was here because another slickdealer raved about it. She was right, my cat ignored every other scratching post I've ever put up but she used this one frequently. I even got another one for the living room. great product!

Exact same experience here. When we let them out into the kitchen in the mornings the run straight to it to scratch and compete for king of the scratching post.

Why not just wrap $9 worth of sisal rope around it? I built my own with a scrap 4x4 post in the center, and if you wind thick sisal tightly, goingaround the corners, and pack down the windings every 2-3 windings, it holds itself without any adhesive, My sisal rope is secured only by 1-2 small brad nails at the bottom and top. I've replaced the sisal after 6-8 years when our cats have worn down the rope.
