What airline partners can I credit this flight to, assuming I'm not working towards an elite status on Fiji.

Is this the deal I've been waiting for? Huge LOTR fan and wanting to visit both islands - is two weeks enough time if I did January 19th through February 4th for example?

We did 2 weeks in FEB 2019, with a week in Fiji on the way! We flew into Auckland and rented a car. Did a week on North Island, then flew to Queenstown for the 2nd week and rented a car. We saw a bunch, including Hobbiton on a gorgeous sunny day and Milford Sound on a really grey rainy day. (Lucky to have been able to see Milford at all, the road was just reopened after being closed for a week due to weather) Did we see everything, no way, but it was a FAB TRIP!! Flew home just as Covid was hitting, should have stayed in NZ for a couple more years! Smilie

We went for three weeks in December of 2018 (flew into Auckland and out from Christchurch) which was a good amount of time, but we could have stayed for another week easily to explore inland a bit more.
We absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back!!!

I just got back from 3 weeks in NZ. Bought tickets on American Airlines for about $800 per ticket from Denver.

1 week on the north island and 2 on the south was good for us. Besides Hobbiton I wasn't too excited about anything on the north island. I really liked Te Anau, Wanaka, and Lake Tekapo. Driving along the west coast of the south island was beautiful as well.

If you do both islands, it's best to drop your car and fly to the south. The ferries are extremely unpredictable. I got lucky, but a lot of people had to wait weeks.

How's cellphone coverage? Did you get local sim or att or Verizon roaming international day pass?

Get a local prepaid SIM card which is way cheaper. "2 degrees" allows eSIM service for prepaid. Vodafone NZ (renamed as ONE ) may allow eSIM for prepaid soon, as per its website. Prices for a month prepay service starts from 10 NZ$ for 2 degrees and 14NZ$ for vodafone NZ. Coverage is good from these 2 providers in major towns and cities.

I have Google Fi which works internationally. Coverage was pretty good just about everywhere.

If you've been to Yellowstone, skip Rotorua.

Just returned on this trip (Fiji Airways) to Christchurch and really like the airline, especially if you buy the bubble seat (middle seat) for $99, or bubble row (buy 2 empty seats plus your own seat) for $199, from LAX to Fiji. I got at least 6 hours out of 10.5 hour flight and feeling great after. On the way back flight was too full so was not offered bubble seat or row, but the transit agent in Fiji left middle seat open so that was so helpful.

Just know you have to go through transit counter (fill out a paper) and security screening in Fiji. The airport's departing gate is a little crowded and noisy but Fiji Airways lounge is great oasis from all that (and food/beverages are good).

If you have seen trees in the USA, skip any location in NZ with trees
