Had something like this and it was terribly inconvenient and inefficient. Opted instead for one of those fishing hats with the mesh vents at the top, plus a removable flap to cover the back of your neck for about this price. Makes me look like a dad (which I am) but also protects better against the sun and is easy to toss in a backpack.
Doesn't this particular brand and model fall apart easily

Got these last year, lol never wore it.. They look decent from far away but... They're kinda hole-y. As in the sun definitely peaks through the hat from the top of the head.
If I actually did wear this every day, 6-9 months would be accurate. LOL but upon receiving it, looks like it's been 2 months in already ha. In terms of how hole-y it is, not from dirtiness or anything.

I had to return one I ordered because it arrived damaged. They sent it is a big box, but the straw was still so dry and brittle that it was broken in an area. They are pretty delicate.
Purchased last April 2nd for $14. It's super cheap and it does get holes and cracks easily. I use it around the yard and am going to buy another.
You could also just find a straw cowboy hat. The ones with the wire in the rim are mad of straw flexible enough to bend without breaking. I've worn them tubing, and they even hold up decently after getting wet. Obviously not perfectly, but surprisingly decent for a straw hat.
Or, you could also check out a synthetic sun hat like those from Outdoor Research that can be packed in a bag and never crack.

Bought 3 for 51.64
$10 shipping sucked (maybe different for CONUS but I'm in HI). But still a great deal
