Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

Is there a legit way to put your Switch games on it? Would rather play some on the Deck rather than the Switch.
I manage to do this using moonlight/ sunshine streaming. Connect steam deck controller using rewasd paid app. You need a capture card and buetooth on pc.

Is there anyway to get my Gamepass games working here? I see I can download anything that it is my steam library but I have Gamepass for most of the stuff I like to play?
Is it basically useless for me?

How is the screen on this? I have trouble playing gamepass cloud through my s22 ultra and razor controller. The screen is just too small. Is this an improvement on ability to see things on screen?
Yes. I was using a note 20 ultra and the kishi, the steam deck is much more comfortable to use.

As an adult in his mid life, this has been the most exciting thing in gaming since the PSP. The catalog of legacy games is huge and you can get so many games under $5-$10 on cdkey web sites and quarterly steam sales. The community is growing and getting savvy - tons of tutorials for optimizations, windows dual boot, and emulation.

In the end, it plays pretty much everything you throw at it.

My biggest gripe is the Steam DRM: not every game plays nice offline. So, make sure you've done your homework before hopping on a flight. I've gotten screwed a couple of times!

Everyone seems to love this device but I have trouble understanding why the shoved all the buttons and analogs to the top 1/6th of the thing. Seems uncomfortable not to mention ugly.

You're not just getting a handheld gaming device, you're getting a Linux computer that you can do so much more with than a Nintendo Switch for example. Connect any controller, keyboard, TV out adapter, etc....

Definitely buy the cheapest version, you can always watch a YouTube how-to video and upgrade

If you are computer savvy at all you can buy the 64GB version and upgrade the SSD to a bigger one. I am rocking a 1tb nvme in my 64GB model.
That's what I did.

Bought a 512GB NVME on eBay for like $50-60. Once I got that, the install took 20 minutes. Big issue and time spent was popping the back casing. Make sure to use a credit card or something similar so you don't break it.

Also make sure to unplug the battery connector. Those who don't may get a newly bricked Steam Deck.

Can you pay with Steam gift cards? Are the GCs on sale anywhere nowadays?
Yes I used credit from a Steam GC to pay for a portion. I rarely see their GCs on discount unless you are buying a second hand GC.

Most direct route would be to install windows.

Great, I should have gotten more funds last time I was getting Steam GCs at a 20% discount. I'm $110 short (at current price) and now I'm debating if I should wait for next GC sale or just go for it

Edit:scratch that, it was 25% off due to getting 5% cashback with credit card

Windows support with the controller is janky though. It sucks

Because that's where your fingers are when you hold it. I find it to be very comfortable to use.
