Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

What's the best version to get?

My son wanted a meta 2 but I think he'd be more amped about this, being a gamer I think he'd get bored with a headset.

It's nice, but the size is a bit off-putting for me. I'd love to see a lite version that removes the trackpads and significantly removes the bulkiness.

You can look into getting an Ayaneo product. They're pretty expensive though.

Get it, it's great. I've had it since Q2 last year. It's versatile. You can do so much with it.

I've had a Steam Deck since the summer. It is my main gaming device as I have given up building PCs every few years and the Deck has allowed me back into PC gaming at a reasonable cost. With a dock, you can basically use it as a PC.
It plays A-list titles well. You can side-load nearly anything, if that's your thing. It is expandable. It docks with my HDTV and plays nicely with a wireless X-box controller.
For the price, you really can't beat it.

If you don't plan to open it up to replace the ssd, then go 256gb.
The 64gb is too small even if you plan to run most things on microsd, as the shaders will take up space on the internal storage. There is a tool to circumvent this but requires more tinkering than you may be comfortable with.
And in my opinion the 512gb does not offer enough to make the price worth it. The antiglare screen is also a bit divisive. Some like it, some don't.

Looks like they're clearing out inventory for the Steam Deck 2
Can't wait, heard it's coming just as fast as the Nintendo Switch 2.

Get it or wait for a better sale? Was trying to get through my Switch backlog first (BOTW, Mario Odyssey, etc) but you guys are making this difficult. Like everyone, also have a Steam backlog and do enjoy playing games away from my desk.

Telling myself I don't neeeeed it right now...

Yep, I use mine docked to a TV 95% of the time and have spent more time playing PC games in the past year than in the previous 15 years, since I haven't owned a gaming-capable PC. The portability is just a bonus for me. Fantastic device for the price.

I have the oculus quest 2 and once the initial curiosity wears off it's kinda a hassle. I mean the library is getting pretty good but it's draw is limited. But depending on your kids age he might enjoy the interactivity more

Those who own the deck, would you take it on an international trip with you or it's bit too big for that.

Where did you buy the 1TB 2230 for $118? Thanks
Do a search on Alibaba for Gioneda 2230 and it should be the first entry. I think it's even cheaper now. Just tried it. $86 and after tax and shipping it comes to $108. It arrived in 2 weeks. It came recommended from a few forum posts on reddit. Incidentally I tried to buy locally and amazon but they were overpriced. This was a lot lot cheaper. They also have other sizes but I think 1tb is the way to go
