Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

I had pre-ordered one and when my name was up I bought it.

I was going to build an arcade machine and use the duck to run it, even had the name "deckade"

I don't know where I'm going with this review. It's a great device, I'm just old and preoccupied with life.

First sale it's had! I have one but honestly don't use it enough. I will say though that I added EmuDeck and some of my favorite games from the PS1, PS2 and a few other consoles and it's been a great emulator.

I recommend the 256GB model personally but of course up to you.

Link to EmuDeck for those wondering.

Same. I like having it but I'm not as tinkery as I was when I was younger. I hardly pick it up.

Had been considering getting a laptop to hook up to my AtGames Legends Pinball machine. But at this price, I'm seriously getting the Steam Deck hooked up to it instead. Anyone have any experience doing this?

Buy the Steam GC from GameStop with 16% cashback from Retailmenot (I bough multiple Steam GC and it works). But you can stack only 3 GC per order. Of course make multiple orders.
Details: Combine with other offers for an even better deal! Cash back is earned on the qualifying purchase total after any discounts and before any fees, taxes, or shipping and handling are applied. Purchases of gift cards are excluded. Rewards earnings not to exceed $50.00.

Actually it has been "speculated" by crappy YouTube channels and clickbait articles however that doesn't mean crap. The Switch Pro has been speculated almost as long as bigfoot and el chupacabra but we all know how those turned out.

for casual gamers, isnt phone gaming enough? is this mainly for playing specific games? given how little i use the Quest2 or phone gaming (never), i need a better excuse to buy this. What other console emulators run well on this?

Those who own the deck, would you take it on an international trip with you or it's bit too big for that.
Depends. I'm currently in Iceland and just left Scotland however living out of a backpack and carry-on for about two weeks. Couldn't spare the room in my bags for a video game system nor did I want to risk breaking the Steam Deck between 4 planes, a dozen buses, etc but I do take it to Colombia about twice a year. When I go down there I say pretty much in one place and have daily access to laundry so I am not so pressed for room in my bags.

The Steam Deck is much larger than the Switch but when I still owned one of those I would have still made the same decision.

Honestly if I were traveling internationally, I'd want to take in the sights and not spend all my time playing games on the deck. But there's nothing stopping you. It's big but it comes with a handy case and can fit in a backpack pretty easily.
There is a lot of downtime when traveling, especially internationally. TV tends to suck, internet can be worse, lots of waiting on planes, wife taking FOREVER to get ready etc so guess what I am doing at 11:32 PM Icelandic time....posting on Slick Deals about missing my Steam Deck LMAO

I have taken it to Austria and Hawaii on different flights.. and if you have small kids, you can bring extra BT controllers and play some really amazing co-op games in flight. Steam Deck has changed my gaming habit and it's the BEST money spent for gadgets.

Was going to make a remark about needing an internet connection to play the Steam Deck, but to my pleasant surprise, I just learned there's an Offline Mode.
