Everywhere else traveling by train is fast, efficient, inexpensive and safe. In the US it is slow, in-efficient, and very expensive.

Amtrak should do more sleeper cars promotion. A roommate from Los Angeles to New York for $2000+ is crazy

Nice. I saw a few isolated $10 NYC-PHL ~2 weeks ago, but didn't realize it was more than a one-off. Posted them to my kid's college parent's facebook group.

As an aside, Amtrak can be very cheap if you watch for saver fares. We do NYC-PHL for $19 each way, and NYC-DC for ~$38 often, and sometimes you can find similar saver fares pretty last minute. Sometimes you need to be early (the pre and post Thanksgiving 2023 PHL-NYC saver fares are mostly gone already).

Was thinking the same what a shame. I wonder if has to do with how densely packed NE is compared to the West. Also more people taking train in the NE?

YEah not worth traveling on Amtrak, slow, long. Wish we had high speed trains in US instead of flying all over. Would be nice to go cross country in a high speed train but it is never going to happen.
