This is a good deal with shipping on just the unit but there will be additional costs to install.

Like an A/C heat pump it needs a concrete or composite concrete pad to sit on. You will likely need an electrician to connect it to your house and you may need to coordinate with your electric company for certain aspects of the installation like the auto transfer. Unless you have natural gas and get the conversion (I think a conversion is possible) you will also need a large propane tank installed (capacity of 100 to 250 gallons) by a propane company and coordinate with them for filling when needed/ahead of storms, etc. The tank is pretty big and needs to be within so many feet of the generator. These require annual maintenance that you may be able to do yourself or it's around $100 to $150 to have Generac do it. The 10 year warranty seems nice but 10 years of annual maintenance would be better. Finally these generators are big and heavy. I don't think you will be able to move it in place with a dolly.

I had a quote for purchase and install from a Generac dealer and installation was 30% or more of the quote. I never went through with it because installation seemed to be where they were gouging. The coordination with your power company should be free or minimal. Obviously electricians vary by area. I think the dealer had me coordinate with the propane company for install of the tank. I know Lowes sells Generacs. I would be interested in how much they charge for installation.

FYI, this comes with a service rated 200A transfer switch. If your home does not have a 200A service, code prevents you from installing this because it has to be the first means of disconnect and has to be sized to your service panel.

I have this exact setup for about 1.5 years now. Works just as you'd expect. There are definitely more costs in other parts that are needed (base pad, piping, surge protector, the delay thingy). I went with Costco back then. All in it was $12,500 minus the 10% they gave me back on a Costco card, so $11,250.
At the time generators we're on backorder for 6 months or more. Sounds like they've gotten ahead of the supply issues now.

Costco has the same generator with transfer switch and 10 yr warranty for $100 less.

https://www.costco.com/honeywell-...67860.html

Late last year it was $4800 with a $500 costco card, so $4300 total costs. I dont know if these kind of generators are going to keep increasing in price, but they certainly have been cheaper in the past. It was about $5k to install, and that was all electrical work, the plumbing was a couple hundred, and we mounted it on old railroad ties. It was a beast to move though.

Right now they are quoting around $15,000 and they want $199 per year service to maintain and monitor since these things need to do self checks and run routinely to stay functional, also correct, you need concrete base, delivery or service for propane tanks, and more.

This is not a battery. It runs on NG or propane. This generator could power a dozen sump pumps at the same time if your home circuits are setup to do so.

I was thinking about going off-grid when my when my California net metering 2.0 for my solar PV panels expires in 14 years. I would have gotten a pair of wall batteries and the generator was for extended cloudy weather. This current winter I wouldn't have survived on batteries alone. Then natural gas prices jumped 300% this winter and it's bound to happen in the future.

So my alternative would be something like Ecoflow's Delta Pro where I can haul them to an EV fast charging station and pay to charge them when I don't have enough sun light. Akin to refilling propane tanks. They also have dual batteries with integrated and propane generators. There are youtube channels of people testing racks of them for 1 day off grid with different high-drain appliances like electric clothes driers and portable ACs.

My hope is that solid state batteries are available in 14 years.

If you've never had major natural gas price jumps and don't anticipate it you should get it. My worry with these is that you'll never know it's broken till you try to use it unless you do yearly maintenance on them.

Not according to here?
https://norwall.com/power-expert/...s%20rating.

As a rule, the transfer switch current rating in amps must meet or exceed the main breaker rating in amps. A 200-Amp ATS can work with any panel rated at 200 amps or less, which includes 100-Amp and 150 Amps panels. However, the reverse is not true. A 100-amp transfer switch cannot work with 200-amp or 150-amp panel.

Can I use a 200 amp transfer switch on a 100 amp service?
I guess what I'm asking is does the 200 amp breaker in the ATS become the main and therefore I would have to run 4/0 AL to a 100 amp panel? Which becomes a sub panel.
Some guys are telling me no, that it is just a switch not actually the main and the service size stays #2 cause both the generator and the panel are 100 amp.
The generator was package bought with the transfer 200 came with 16kw generac.
Please advise.
Thanks, Not Sure
I did the same thing at my house. Inspector allowed it since the conductors are protected by the 100 amp breaker in the electrical panel. The 200 amp breaker in the transfer switch is just used as a disco.

All I see are generator deals on SD.

mainly because the battery and solar panel deals call themselves "generators"
when they are just storage batteries. So every time my deal alert for generators goes off.

Is a full house generator the hip thing now? All I see are generator deals on SD.

also, terrible reviews.
If it's hip to have power during an outage, you can call me Miles Davis. Also, please point me to the "terrible reviews". Lowes and Sam's are both showing a 4.8 with ~2000 reviews each.

FYI the installation cost is typically the same as the cost of the generator (or slightly more).

Even on a "simple" installation you're looking at >$10k total.

I have this Generac 22kw and it has been nice when needed. YMMV, it was a total pain in the ass to get installed so make sure you have a good contractor. You can basically double the price of this to get turn key operating after electrical and gas work. When I bought mine in 2019, it didn't come with an included 10 year warranty. I had to pay like an extra $350'ish to bump my warranty to this - but it includes parts, labor, and travel (yes, they list that separately). And just weeks ago after fighting with Generac customer service for YEARS did they successfully and accurately add my warranty.

The WiFi and app is complete ass.

Maintenance isn't too bad. You can obviously pay and get hammered by a generac tech for hundreds each year - or you can buy the service kits yourself. It's simple oil and filter changes every year, and then they add in spark plugs on odds years. Now the plugs aren't that bad, except there is one on the backside of the motor near the wall. That can be a pain but just have patience. Follow proper gapping and torque. Plenty of youtube videos.

Again, I can't reiterate enough how bad the wifi and app are. But hey, it works when you need it.

This is not a battery backup. This is a whole-house generator. It has an internal combustion engine that runs on Natural Gas and converts that energy to electrical energy. In case of AC failure, this thing is meant to kick on automatically and begin supplying electricity until AC comes back. 22kW is enough for about 180Amps, which would be sufficient to run the vast majority of houses out there with no interruption. You do need an NG supply at your house to get this to work, and I would recommend professional install.

yes, I think solid state et al. Will be much better positioned in another decade. then bidirectional with BEV will be more commonplace than now. as it stands, my power hasn't been off more than a few hours in 13 years in CA & that's very infrequent. ergo this generator makes no monetary sense for me.

Considering how much people spend on useless cosmetic items for their homes this seems like a rational purchase. I've always wanted one but it's the perfect item to always be too low on the todo list to get dealt with.
