This is a good deal with shipping on just the unit but there will be additional costs to install.

Like an A/C heat pump it needs a concrete or composite concrete pad to sit on. You will likely need an electrician to connect it to your house and you may need to coordinate with your electric company for certain aspects of the installation like the auto transfer. Unless you have natural gas and get the conversion (I think a conversion is possible) you will also need a large propane tank installed (capacity of 100 to 250 gallons) by a propane company and coordinate with them for filling when needed/ahead of storms, etc. The tank is pretty big and needs to be within so many feet of the generator. These require annual maintenance that you may be able to do yourself or it's around $100 to $150 to have Generac do it. The 10 year warranty seems nice but 10 years of annual maintenance would be better. Finally these generators are big and heavy. I don't think you will be able to move it in place with a dolly.

I had a quote for purchase and install from a Generac dealer and installation was 30% or more of the quote. I never went through with it because installation seemed to be where they were gouging. The coordination with your power company should be free or minimal. Obviously electricians vary by area. I think the dealer had me coordinate with the propane company for install of the tank. I know Lowes sells Generacs. I would be interested in how much they charge for installation.

FYI, this comes with a service rated 200A transfer switch. If your home does not have a 200A service, code prevents you from installing this because it has to be the first means of disconnect and has to be sized to your service panel.

I have this exact setup for about 1.5 years now. Works just as you'd expect. There are definitely more costs in other parts that are needed (base pad, piping, surge protector, the delay thingy). I went with Costco back then. All in it was $12,500 minus the 10% they gave me back on a Costco card, so $11,250.
At the time generators we're on backorder for 6 months or more. Sounds like they've gotten ahead of the supply issues now.

You're not wrong. From permits to sub panels to the transfer switch and the fuel source it's not as cheap as it looks.

Home Depot will arrange all that for you. Not sure how Costco does it.

I mean, seriously, when I order this from Costco do they just leave the generator on a skid in my driveway and say "Good luck, bro?"
Maybe they will say, "Bro, good luck bringing this back to our store!"

I purchased the Honeywell 22kw a few weeks back for 5100. Paid 2,500 for a Generac certified tech to install it, included all materials. Added the 10yr warranty for 1100. This is a better deal than I got. Make sure you shop around for installation.
How did you find your installer? the quotes I got were a little outrageous to say the least.

If that's all you paid for then yes, that is exactly what will happen. The installation is a separate and additional fee. I was shocked at what the installation cost was for mine, do to how my home was set and the location of the generator it cost as much as the generator cost just to get it all set up and good to go. So even if you get a deal on the geny, it's not inexpensive to get it setup, unless one can do all that themselves, which most, I'd bet, including myself cannot do. Given that, I would still do it again as we live a bit away from any city and we lose power quite often, so it gets used enough to justify the initial expense.

I'd like to get a roof solar setup and a battery wall before getting this type of generator. I mostly have short periods of power outage and a solar panel and battery would be more useful. It'll lower my energy bills and also provide some power backup when the power goes out. Not as good long lasting as a propane generator and not as dependable if things go really wrong.
Batteries are expensive coupled with the fact thatt you need multiple to run things like air conditioning, generators tend to be a better bet. Batteries make more sense if you're on a time-of-use billing for your electricity.

yep! they do. Even home Depot, unless you arrange installation, says on their delivery info that they will deliver to the driveway only. You're on the hook figuring out how to move a 300lb box after that.

As a reminder to all thinking about this, every installation is different. Cost can vary greatly.

A generator 5' from your Main Panel will be cheaper than one 50' away. Your electrical service need's interrupted and the transfer switch, control wiring needs placed between. No situation will be the same. Often times this completely changes the layout and things need to be reinstalled or moved. Not to mention generac recommended installation cable costs over $10 a foot. You may need a Service upgrade to accommodate, it may be more economical to upgrade to 200a service, your electrical service may already contain code violations that will get flagged by inspectors.

There is electrical inspection costs and permitting

If you dont have NG or LP then tank costs, gas lines, regulators and installation of these items all are required.

Plus the Labor/Time to do install and coordinate all that is required.

Find a good electrician and hvac guy in your area to give you a quote and make sure they are comfortable installing homeowner bought equipment.

I went to Generacs website and looked at their dealer list. Found a local dealer and had him do a site survey. He gave an estimate of around 3300. I talked him down to 2500.

He did an awesome job and didn't have an issue with installing a unit that I purchased. It was indeed just dropped on a pallet in my driveway, I didn't expect a third party delivery person to move it where I wanted it.

Another local dealer quoted me 17k to purchase a 22kw and install it. So buying the unit myself and sourcing the install saved a ton.

Just get some lengths of PVC pipe and roll it around like the old Egyptians (ok, they used logs).

Went through a dealer and had this installed last February. Was $9k for generator, pad, transfer switch, surge protector, and installation. Permit was around $250 from township.

Montco PA.

Has saved us 4 times already this past year. Power was out for 24 hours on Christmas Eve.

The wifi module requires a phone to connect to your network and it is flaky. The Android app had bugs preventing setup from completing, but seems like the issues finally were fixed from an update.

Yes, I had to "negotiate" with my delivery guys to use lift straps and move it to the back yard, even tho the delivery service said they would do it for free. Best $80 i ever spent after watching them.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank Blainn

All these people saying 2-3 K for install are a aberration, my quotes were from 8-15k for my Honeywell.

For real tho…why are there so many generator deals all of a sudden. Is there a mass surplus of them now?
There isn't a lot of generator sales going on. It is the same Generac generator that everyone carries so Generac is running the sale. However, the Sam's Club price is not really a good deal as this is the normal price from other locations. For what it's worth, Generac has drastically increased the price of their generators in recent years. And in drastic, I mean 50% price increase. As for ratings, these generators work fine when you first install them and that is when most users rate any item they purchase. Generac is more of an economical manufacturer so they lack longevity.
