Aside from transcoding, this NAS is very capable of direct stream playback.

Another plus of this NAS would be the non-proprietary 10G add-on card. Unfortunately future Synology models use a proprietary 10G add-on card.

I have multiple systems running Xpenology different DSM versions stably for years...

It takes some work but we'll worth you can use any old nas box or pc or server.

I had a Old HP N54L that i repurposed with 4x 10Tb and have a powerful NAS running Xpenology.

Seems from what you're saying the DSM port is very stable, good to know. I have some smaller capacity drives laying around, and a few spare PCs, so I may try this. It supports pretty much everything DSM on Synology supports package wise? Hot swapping drives and volume expansion work too?
