The flat remote was utter garbage.
Yes it can get confusing. Apple TV is hardware, it's a streaming device. Apple TV plus is the subscription platform with monthly or annual rates. Both serve different purposes. The hardware let's you use a multitude of apps (streaming content, YouTube, netflix, games etc.), several people including myself prefer using this over the built in TV apps. Much better interfaces, faster, more reliable network connections, regular updates, better capability to handle 4k video and atmos sound etc. Apple TV plus is the subscription service to watch content that's made by Apple, not everyone is big on it yet. Just a handful of really good shows. Hope this helps.
The point of this is :

1) it may be significantly faster than your built in smart apps
2) it may support apps or features your smart tv does not .
3) this model has a thread radio built in and can be used as the brains for home automation stuff .

What about the Roku and FireTV? I wouldn't be surprised if LG has some special agreement with NBC to limit ads, the same way companies get their apps as dedicated buttons on the remote.
No commercials on my Roku!

Try this please!
Use Peacock app on Apple TV. Try the new Pokerface show. You will get an incredible amount of commercials.
Now I go to my Roku, or my LG tv built in app - not one commercial!!!
Same account, same show, same episode.

I want to love my Apple TV.

So then the question begs to be asked, if you already have a 4K TV, what are the odds that it's not a smart TV? If you do have the Apple app on your 4K TV, why does it make sense to spend money for the "home automation" stuff? My LG has the remote access to functionality.

Not bashing the product, but just raising some questions that some people might have. I figure if you have a 4K TV, you most likely already have the app built in.
If the smart tv and/or it's apps in your smart tv still work great, then you are a smart/fortunate tv purchaser.

I got tired of unplugging the power to my "smart" Samsung, LG and then tcl tvs to get the Netflix or Prime streaming apps to load. I'm tired of then a year and a half after purchasing a Roku ultra, it freezes and I have to remove power to it to get it to work at all. I then buy the latest roku ultra, and a year later it also starts freezing.

My first Apple TV hasn't yet started locking up. I've talked with people who still use their 5 year old non-4k Apple TVs on their older 1080p tvs, and I went Apple TV. I still don't appreciate the interface, but at least it hasn't yet locked up.

These remotes are very unergonomic you all ways press multiple buttons at the same time on the top circular button. The flat touchpad remote was much better.
Just wondering. Do u sit there holding the remote for hours in as ur watching?

That's not true. The 2nd generation model does Atmos just fine in apps & apple music. It does not support the lyric mode in Apple Music.

The Apple TV is great, super nice high end streaming device will last you years and not slow down it's super over kill in terms of internals. I still have a first gen one that I use and it's great!

Agreed.

One minor detail to add: this does have Thread, but does not support Matter.

If you don't know what Matter is (in the context of home automation and/or HomeKit) then it probably doesn't mean much to you.

Only the newest (3rd gen) 128GB AppleTV supports Matter. If you don't care, then this is the model to get.
I THINK you got that backwards. I didn't do the googling but thread is a separate radio akin to zwave, zigbee, and Bluetooth. Matter is a conglomerate of smart home providers agreeing on a platform to host connected home devices which can operate on any of the communication protocols so this box should get an update for matter but wouldn't have thread since it's a new radio.

I also have an LG 4K TV, however I prefer to use the Apple 4k TV because LG content store does not have the ESPN app. Another reason I prefer an apple tv or streaming device is I use an AV receiver for surround sound and ARC doesnt work well with my tv.

Correction: the 64 GB Apple TV (this one) does NOT support Thread or Matter.

The 128 GB 2022 Apple TV 4K (the one with Ethernet) supports Thread and Matter.

Thread is the networking technology. Matter runs over Thread so typically most devices that support Thread will support Matter as well.

I have two Apple TVs 4K (original from 2018). This seems like a good deal, but I won't replace them until they start having problems. Regardless these are the reasons I like the Apple TV:
  1. No evasive system tracking and ads; compare this to most built-in TV systems that track everything you do all the time
  2. Consistent UI across TVs; I feel this is often overlooked, but for my family it is a big deal that they can go to either of our TVs and things just work the same. I could also just go out and upgrade a TV to any brand and for my family things wouldn't change
  3. Responsiveness; I've never felt like any of the UI or Apps are slow
  4. Ecosystem; I already have a lot of Apple devices, so an Apple TV just works well with the other things I have

The Apple tvOS release notes page lists Matter support as a general feature of tvOS 16.1, without qualifying it to a particular hardware generation: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207936

With regard to Thread, Apple's page for the Apple TV 2nd gen says that model is "Not compatible with non-HomeKit Thread devices". See footnote 5 at bottom of page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207936

I think you missed that this deal is for the *2nd* generation AppleTV 4K. All versions of that device support thread.

As your TV ages, you may see the apps becoming slower and more clunky. They eventually won't support all of the latest features. So while you can certainly use the built-in apps now, you may want to buy a streaming box in the future to replace your built-in apps as they diminish in functionality because your TV could possibly outlive the usefulness of its apps and buying a box is cheaper than a new TV.
