i've been using this mic for many years now and it sounds fantastic compared to all the cheap stuff that has been introduced since. other than the shure MV7 (for way more coin) this thing is really hard to beat.

i prefer it over all of the blue mics and the ability to use it as an audio output as well is a big plus for me.

for gaming, i plug my headphones into the mic itself for playback from the computer. the mic also has 2 simple thumbwheels for headphone volume and the mix control between the mic itself vs. computer sound output. this is great for adding just a touch of "yourself" to your ears when gaming with closed-ear headphones and on comms.

i've also used it for a fair number of webinars for work as the voice-over and live moderator and it never disappoints.

only cons imo are the sometimes quirky ASIO drivers, but I prefer that to a vendor that just drops support, which happens far too often.

they're blowing these out as the new usb-c version has just been released with higher quality A>D conversion using the same capsule.

fwiw i am a professional sound engineer and have always thought this mic in it's xlr version is a total cheap sleeper. sure, it's not my "first" choice when i have a deep mic locker, but in a pinch this little dude sounds pretty damned good on most any source, especially with a stereo pair.
Great mic

Reviewer/comparison I read before indicate AT2020 USB+ is better for musical instruments compare to something like Yeti. Like AT2020 USB offer more in terms of recording instruments and capturing a more natural sound. Yeti sounds sterile when it comes to capturing drums, guitars, or otherwise. And there are pros and cons of each one.

How does this compare to the Samson Q2U? Seems like that offers a lot more options and features for less.

Samson mics are clean but only on the highs the usb version that was 100$ I had it's like a blue yeti pretty much... I have the xlr version of the at2020 but they aren't that good tbh... also I'm selling all my music gear including all these mics for legit half the price. I have a shuresm7b... honestly you can get a 25$ headset from xiberia I think it's called better mic quality then both. Blue Yeti has too much background noise. Samson picks up alot of highs depends on what you use it for

What are you using the mic for? The Q2U is a dynamic mic and won't pick up much at all that isn't directly in front of the mic. Perfect for things like work video calls even though your daughter is watching TV across the room. Not good for recording multiple voices or a conversation unless you're very intimate with the others on the recording.

Good mic, but if you're planning to record into your own interface, you'll want the regular AT2020 with an XLR connector.

If I wanted to get a mic of similar quality that reduces ambient sounds (keyboard, mouse, etc) what would you suggest?

Get a dynamic mic. Dont buy a condenser Mic.
I have a FIFINE Dynamic Microphone and I like it so far.

I started my podcast with a pair of these back in 2014, choosing them because that's what the guys on Scriptnotes were using at the time. Sound great, but you have to cope with the sensitivity of condenser mics compared to dynamics at picking up ambient noise. (I became very good at setting an expander during mix.)

However after a couple of years we started having trouble with them starting to make a horrendous digital garbage noise while tracking for long periods of time (we were a very long-form gabfast show) which oddly didn't record, but made for unlistenable monitoring.

AT support denied there were any problems and it wasn't happening in Audacity, but we used REAPER to record. It also took at least 10 minutes to manifest so testing and reproducing the glitch was too difficult.

Ended up converting our setup over to a Focusrite Scarlet 18i8 4-pre interface and XLR AT2035 and AT2020 mics which allowed for more guests. I'm not sure if there was actually a problem with the USB mics and I'm about to restart the show with my cohost coming in remotely so I'm going to give him one of the mics to see if it works now under that setup.
