I'm A+ certifified and have worked with computers at home since I was younger. I've setup my own home network/WiFi using pfSense and Unifi equipment. I've been having trouble obtaining my first entry level IT job. Every place want 10 years experience for an entry level role. Currently in the healthcare industry for over a decade and looking to switch careers.

I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback!

I would love to learn cloud stuff like AWS, Azure and Google cloud. Cybersecurity is also on my radar.

Currently working to obtain Network+ and learning Linux.
I started my IT field at a dealership. They didn't know anything. I got to experiment and screw up a lot of things. They were cheap so they got what they needed and I got what I needed. Lol

Just a heads up to everyone. Elon Musk fired the entire communications/HR team. There is nobody at twitter verifying previous employment.

Adjust your resumes as needed.

Bonjour, comment allez-vous?

Took 3 years of French in high school. It was so easy for me, already knowing Spanish.

That's awesome. How did you get your start in IT after getting the Sec+?

Quote from dareal :
Get Security+ cert. I went from high school French teacher to IT field with that. Best decision I ever made.

I'm surprised not many people talk about these cybersecurity apprenticeships!
I will definitely look into this.
Do you know any good ones?

I work full time...would I still be able to do an apprenticeship ?

Quote from babygdav :
1. Amazon and the entire tech industry just fired and keep firing a ton of workers.
200,000+ without a job

https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.d65b1...ImgRaw&r=0

So keep in mind, unless you're willing to start at the very bottom, and search hard, it's IT job winter time.

2. The medical field is more stable and can get you over $100k with the same/less work.
Eg. Radiology tech. God the amounts they pay in Texas to drag them over. Less brain power used, faster to train (imo), stable as can be....

3. If you're gonna get into AWS, bone up on Azure. Both used widely, doubles the jobs you can get in this niche easily (since once you know AWS or Azure, isn't that hard to pickup the other).

Keep in mind Microsoft has a deeper offering from Office to Windows to Azure to Power BI to virtual PCs in Azure etc.

So while tiny companies might start with mess - Google Docs this, AWS that, etc - at some point, many realize why are we paying for so many diverse services across multiple companies, none integrated?

Then they go Microsoft 365 everything and life simplifies....

But this training path is going to take longer, so the second step.

4. https://theamericandreamacademy.org/

Free CERTIFICATES and online training from IT support to Cybersecurity (another hot IT field that pays).

5. Look up "community college cybersecurity apprenticeship".
Federal government is sponsoring FREE training and PAID apprenticeships.

...

If you have time and need pay while studying, #5 would be a good path.

(All good apprenticeships generally are. Like Plumbing apprenticeships with unions that are paid.)

I was in the same boat, cisco certified network admin well only on paper, knocked so many doors only to be told they need someone with experience. That time I realized the market pretty saturated. Happily in a different profession now for over a decade now. Still learning IT at home on weekend through online courses like this to keep up to date with changing tech

Man, this is encouraging to hear. I'm in Houston as well. I finished Stephane's course and I'm now doing Neil Davis's course. I did buy Boso's practice tests but haven't tried them yet.

Any advice for someone trying to get into the industry? I come from a geophysical data management background in O&G and I feel like the transition could be tough.

I bought Mareeks course, but haven't started it yet. How many hours did it take you to finish?

https://www.nist.gov/itl/applied-...hip-finder

The government has a list of apprenticeships across America.

Here in SoCal, Coastline Community's is a decent program.

Even if you don't have the qualifications, you can do their AA IT program free (All CA community colleges are free for first time degree earners), or shorter cyber certificate (paid , so scholarships and work finishing the program ).

While doing the ibm cyber certificate free innings online thru the American dream academy program offer.

...

Apprenticeship. I'd assume there will be some company willing to work around the current hours. After all, security is a 24/7/365 operation ...

Otherwise, I'd grab the certificate, then fish for the entry level jobs.

Try checking this out:
https://www.firstinspires.org

They have levels from Munchkin ages (Junior FIRST Lego League, ages 6-8), Elementary (FIRST Lego League, ages 9 - 14) High School (FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competitions).
I've coached FLL in the past and it was fun for the kids, but it's more of an extracurricular activity that requires some significant funding. I try to focus on the "soft skills" like communication and general problem-solving, since they apply to all subjects and industries. I also integrate a fair bit of art (visual and audio), but I'm always wondering how important technical skills are at a younger age. Teaching twenty-five 5 year olds how to use a non-touchscreen computer is a nightmare, and programming is not a priority at that point.

It's funny that you mention it!

I work for the County. Over 10 years in the Pharmacy department at a big hospital and they don't want to hire me for an entry level IT role.

I would leave my current job for an entry level job and take a pay cut for a year or two, but...
its hard to give up all the benefits.

It's quite the conundrum.

I have to look elsewhere...currently looking for a part time IT job, but a lot of positions are full time.
Maybe Pharmacy IT/Informatics where u work at?

I would probably choose AWS, since they seem to be popular.

Do you mean a course by Google on Data Analytics?

I have the Google IT Support Certificate as well.
I got that and then the A+. I have found they offer much support post-course.
Maybe I'm just doing it wrong>?
https://www.coursera.org/professi...-analytics is the certification I was referring to.

AWS is big, but also crowded. GCP skills may be a way to differentiate from the crowd and grow with a fast growing area. Google is pushing a lot of investment into the tech as well as into getting and growing customers. My 2 cents as someone who's been in this field for quite a while.
