How would they even refurb an SSD?
Wipe it digitally and with a rag?

heh, most of these are either returns or system pulls.

ive purchased a couple over the last year and theyve all had extremely low power on/usage.

same here. basically a return cheaper than new with a few hours on them. no problems and fast enuf ship.

But wouldn't that be called an open-box item then?

I do agree with post #1 that it sounds a bit strange to call an SSD refurbished. Maybe they format the SSD and wipe it with a cloth and that's about it.

But I guess as long as the item works fine and it's a lot cheaper than it is brand new, then I suppose it doesn't matter what it's called.

These 870 EVOs (especially larger capacity ones) had a lot of failures recently. I wonder if these are reconditioned drives which were RMAed.

they may have been. mine is the smaller drive and no problems so far; if mem serves it was the biggest drives that had some problems. the one i got had about 2 hours on it, but the drive was clean so maybe that is the refurb part of the story.

Edit, the drive i got is used as a C drive and no need to have a large drive if you use a small spinner HD for storage. saves cash that way and i get the great performance of SSD.

I bought one of these refurb SSD's from BB about a year ago.

When I went to pick it up at the pickup counter, the box was all smashed/torn apart. I even made a comment to the guy like "wow, what happened to this?", but didn't bother to open it up. Got it home, and the drive itself looked like it had been run over. It was so mangled.

Just for shits n giggles, I decided to test it to see if it actually worked, and to my surprise, it did. I ended up keeping it, if only because I didn't want to wait another week for another one to become available.

The one and only "refurb" I bought from BB was a counterfeit. With obvious signs of tampering / gluing of the label. Then I got the distrustful stinkeye at the store for returning it; I had to get it approved by management. Never again.

Basically. How it was once supposed to go:
- Vendor specific or approved HW test,
- vendor specific or approved media wipe,
- physical wipe down,
- objective grading of drive and sales box aesthetics,
- update inventory system with grade and product status,
- package/sticker for resell.
