No the poly insulation is getting a lot better but down is usually lighter and can pack into a small bag. Then when you pull it out just fluff it up by shaking it like a duck does to get the insulation properties back. Some of the better more expensive poly insulations will actually keep you warm when wet almost like wool. You just need to decide what is best for you.
Not that important for regular average-joe jacket use but others might disagree.
I also remember reading that it depends on the purpose…
Down is warmer, but also not good for wet weather since it will absorb moisture (and smell).
Synthetic is not as warm, but better for wet weather since it won't absorb moisture and smell.
