I've always used old newspapers or junk mail and kindling from skids. New paid to start a fire except for the one or two matches it takes.

This comes out to less than a quarter per unit and yall are still talking about saving more money by using cotton balls and Vaseline? Jeez. Who wants to mess with that? This is worth not having to mess with any of that every time I go camping. And these last forever. Last box lasted a decade. Toss it in your camp box and you're set. Cotton balls and vaseline? Making kindling and remembering to bring newspaper sheets? No thanks.
