Pulse, Phantom Gaming or the Merc are $999. I don't think this is worth the extra dough.

I agree but if you're building out one of those fancy pc's with custom cooling and lighting...this card might be worth it. It looks really good.

For an all out no comprise sure. But which one would you choose? Keep in mind if you opt for the 7700X add a cooler.

Better binned card with better cooling, better shroud, better aesthetics for $150 more. NITRO cards are Sapphire's premium line. You'll get lower temps because of the vapor chamber and the boost clock is 200mhz higher than the pulse. This card sold out asap last year and now it's back in stock $50 off.

You're gaining about ~6fps. So let's round up to an extra 10fps for $150 more vs stock.

But......RGB. Very wow.

Yeah I personally love paying $150 more for a maybe 1% increase in performance.

I am using this card, the reason I bought it instead of other cheaper one, is because I want to avoid coil whine as much as possible, I believe paying $150 more is for something other than just RGB

I have a 7950x and another build with a 7900x. I'm happy with the 7950x since there's no non-X equivalent. That said, as far as the 7900x,if the non-X were available I would have taken that over the 7900X in a heartbeat. I play at really high resolutions and almost all my games are going to be GPU limited for awhile.

Between your two combinations, I'd take the 7700 and get it with the Asrock GPU and save some money and power. If you're not going "all-out" just save the cash.I know that these new X chips are supposed to run at 90-95C but it's really uncomfortable. I have my 7950X in eco mode and running at 105W and after a gaming session, the tempered glass in my case is hot to the touch. Really unsettling.

This card was just on sale for 1,099, plus 100 off with a promo code on the 29th to drop it down to 1,000.

If that deal comes back this would maybe be worth it, right now its too expensive

Call me old fashioned, but anything north of $600 is too expensive, period. I can't believe how out of control GPU prices have gotten in recent years.

Without actually playing the game, how would one know if a game is CPU or GPU-intensive? I play a variety of games from DOTA to Halo Infinite and I've read that CPU is for frame rate and GPU is for resolution. But then I hear some games are more taxing on one or the other.

Is there a general principle that certain types of games or certain publishers put out games that lean heavily on CPU or GPU? Or is it just random?

Strategy games (like an RTS) tend to be CPU-bound, especially for large and/or custom maps where there are a ton of units on the battlefield.

The higher the resolution, the more GPU-bound you are (which is why many professional review sites use 1080p resolution when reviewing CPUs). That's not to say the CPU is irrelevant when running high resolutions. You want to ensure your CPU isn't bottlenecking your GPU. Generally, if you have a super high-end card, you'll want to pair it with a high-end CPU (Ryzen 7 or Core i7).

Reading CPU/GPU reviews is a great way to glean info on which games are bound one way or another, and/or which games favor team red vs. green.
