This drive was launched in Dec 2021 so any "used" drives would probably be no older than ~1 year. Surprising how fast these came to the "used" market

Sounds like you are just not sure what to do. You missed one other individual post to reply to though, maybe that one will have the answer.

Does anyone know if Synology units will properly read all of the SMART data on these? Synology not being able to read the bad sector count seems to be the problem with drives over 16TB on Synology units.

I've had 3 spinning Seagates fail on me over the years, all years into use, doesn't track with typical HDD bathtub curve. Never again.

Actually Tom's Hardware just posted an article about how poorly Seagate and Hitachi drives have been, though this isn't any "news"

Seagate and Hitachi made their popularity due to being the primary drives offered with big companies PCs and servers like HP, Dell, IBM, etc. I've had more failed Seagate mechanical drives in the past ~15 years than any other brand. Hitachi's DeskStar line in a close second.

But yes it's a good price. I would even say get it if you need one. Just don't expect to run it for 7+ years and don't expect to be writing to it constantly or it could belly up sooner than later.

Good for NAS and basic file, ftp or web server storage. If you're worried about failure get 2 or more and raid them.
Sadly, hard drives are the most important component in a pc, and etc. Everything else can be replaced.

Lost data can't be.

Hey reliability of hard drives today, compared to a decade or so ago, is night and day. Yet ALL hard drives will eventually die, and no alternative storage like blurays that can deal with today's/tomorrow's drive sizes. Only choice cloud backup, where in truth, you're trusting others (regardless of encryption, esp with quantum computing in horizon) to keep it safe, not sell out their firm and change policies/prices, not to go bankrupt, and if you miss payments due to illness etc, your data is sooner than later deleted.

No good options right now without forking over significant cash, at least for home/small box users.

This. WD Red is built for NAS, not desktop file storage. Get WD Blue or WD Green.

I just won't touch Seagate drives, no matter how good the deal. My personal experience with them has been so poor. Based on how new these drives are, and how every retailer seems to have "renewed" disks already for sale, I'd say stay away.
Same here. Seagate never again after I had a fail. If it ain't western digital or HGST, count me out.

For anecdotal evidence on the other side of things, I have a Hitachi drive that is over 15 years old and 2 Seagate drives that are close to a decade old in my server that has run almost 24/7, aside from downtime, for close to a decade now and still good health surprisingly. Some of them I have replaced in recent years only due to larger capacity needs and limited slots for them, but personally, I have never had a drive fail, knock on wood.

I won't defend their recent drives as I pretty much only buy Western Digital for over 5 years now and have also heard not the best from them, but at least their older stuff had some solid drives.

Can you remove the internal hard drive?

How is the longevity of this compared to WD Red Pro?

WD Red is fine, "built for NAS" means it can handle 24x7 and tight enclosures

so it exceeds typical 8hr duty cycle in desktops and has better vibration and power/heat specs

nope those are typically less capable drives...

I'm not sure. But I just bought a 4-bay hdd docking station and try to use seagate tools to detect bad sectors. I expect it to run a few days. I think that's how we check for bad blocks?
