I have used all of the Scotts (Color Enhanced is Lowes, Earthgro is Home Depot) as well as the Lowes referenced above and had good results with all. I got the Color Enhanced last year and the variance between bags was noticeable (i.e, pine bark vs hardwood hammered). In my experience its all a crap shoot. I have never had issues with mold in any of the varieties. All of that said, last year Lowes did the Scotts 5 for 10 the same time they did this. Home Depot will normally run their Scotts 4 for 10 around this time also.
I've worked at Lowes Twice. The $2 sale was 3-5 times a year, Spring and Fall 'Black Friday', Memorial, July 4th and Labour Days. The first sale I would tell be to not buy because it was left over sitting in the snow for several months. New batches would come in for summer sales. Now the sales almost never take place. Also 8 years ago when I worked there a single bag cost $2.26 so Lowes would lose a ton of money.
Equivalent to $27 per cubic yard of mulch. Probably cheaper than most other places.

However, as the OP acknowledges quality can vary. Some batches could even be moldy..

Is Scotts 'color advantage' mulch generally better? Currently $4/1.5cuft by me so quite a bit more pricey...

Home depot has Vigoro 2 cu ft. at $3.33 each

(it was $2.98 for a couple of days while the sale started...must have been a glitch)

I used both and found that the lowes premium mulch is finer than Scott's. Scotts has bigger chunks. So decomposition is easier for the lowes premium over Scott's. I did Scott's over 3 years ago, and I still see big chunks where I did not mulch over over the years.

Thats funny, I've seen the exact opposite. I'm in the Northwest.

In the past, I've purchased a few bags and checked quality prior to doing bulk buy.

My local garden center sells colored mulch per cubic yard for $30 per yard, which is more than the sale price at Lowe's but cheaper than the non-sale price at Lowe's. Delivery is another $50 with a minimum of 3 cubic yard purchase. I had bought once from the garden center, and it looked like they shortchange me when they dump it on my driveway. At least with the bagged mulch, I know quantity is guaranteed.

Does anyone know when this deal will expire? Up north we aren't quite ready to mulch so ideally I'd buy on the last day possible....

I always wait for the $2 bags to replenish mulch around the house. Used Scott's color enhanced last year…hopefully that goes to $2 but if not, I'm sure this do just fine. 💪🏽

Have had good bags, moldy bags, and even one Full of grubs. Quality definitely varies.

I believe they generally advertise it as active for two weeks but last year they extended to four.

I know this is for mulch, but does anyone know if the garden soil is going to be 5/10 or 4 for 10? Need to mix my own for container gardening. Peat/compost/dirt.
