I have used all of the Scotts (Color Enhanced is Lowes, Earthgro is Home Depot) as well as the Lowes referenced above and had good results with all. I got the Color Enhanced last year and the variance between bags was noticeable (i.e, pine bark vs hardwood hammered). In my experience its all a crap shoot. I have never had issues with mold in any of the varieties. All of that said, last year Lowes did the Scotts 5 for 10 the same time they did this. Home Depot will normally run their Scotts 4 for 10 around this time also.

I've worked at Lowes Twice. The $2 sale was 3-5 times a year, Spring and Fall 'Black Friday', Memorial, July 4th and Labour Days. The first sale I would tell be to not buy because it was left over sitting in the snow for several months. New batches would come in for summer sales. Now the sales almost never take place. Also 8 years ago when I worked there a single bag cost $2.26 so Lowes would lose a ton of money.

Equivalent to $27 per cubic yard of mulch. Probably cheaper than most other places.

However, as the OP acknowledges quality can vary. Some batches could even be moldy..

Slightly random question - my local community offers "free mulch" but it's generally not the fine triple ground variety of premium mulch (guessing single run through a chipper?)

I usually need about 10 cu yds so it's a lot of money to buy every year.

Thoughts? Is there a consumer grade non gigantic machine I can buy that will create really finely ground mulch?? I don't mind some extra effort since last year I paid around 600 bucks just for mulch. That is a lot to save with some elbow grease if it's doable.

This is the way. It astounds me that people spend time, effort, and money every year for stuff that looks like shit a month later. Lay stone once and your done forever and it looks infinitely better.
You think it looks better? I think stone mulch looks ugly.

$79 delivery is a bit painful.

But the alternative is multiple trips as my vehicle can only handle like 20 bags at a time.
I'm guessing I want ~50 bags
Is there any "taskrabbit" type delivery service for Lowes that would undercut their $79 charge?

Or is best solution to go in with the neighbors to split shipping cost
Prepay for bags at lowes (online for pickup)
Rent a home depot truck for an hour for $17
Run to lowes and have them forklift your pallet onto the truck
Get home and toss them where needed
Return truck

For newbie, can you recommend the mulch I should get for my 3 cubic yard garden?
Today I got a quote from landscaping guy and he said it will cost $100 per cubic yard for mulch which sounds like a rip off.
Please advice

$180 for 5 yards mulch + $25 delivery is std. by me. Minimum 5, which is more than I need so two trips to HD for 45 bags gets me 3.33 yards and saves $40

Does anyone know when this deal will expire? Up north we aren't quite ready to mulch so ideally I'd buy on the last day possible....
I always buy and keep in bags until after the rainy season

Triple ground non dyed hardwood is the best mulch available most places. You will have to lay it every year, but it is the best against weeds, drought and heat. The Lowe's bags are only double ground and they do not look as nice for a smooth, earthy finish

Quick question that may seem rhetorical but… I recently had a few trees cut down because apparently woodpeckers are boring into the trees killing a specific species in the Northeast… anyway, I used the wood chips (I hate to waste anything) as mulch in my front yard as well as my garden.

It's actually quite pleasant to look at even though it's not dyed.

Is this essentially the same thing as what's in these bags but just not dyed? Maybe even healthier being that there's no dyes, chemicals, and potentially terminates / funguses?

Thanks.

Get the free mulch, use as base layer. Top dress with colored mulch.

There are calculators on the internet to help determine that. I find them usually on the landscaping supply company websites. A few factors to account for, namely area and depth, but it's a good starting place to quantify how much mulch. If you want cheap or nearly free, check your local township yard waste center, or try chipdrop. I've done the latter in the past bc I don't have a truck or trailer to pick up free mulch from the township, but chipdrop is literally ground up trees, leaves, branches. It's not pretty, but I use it as a base layer then put the colored stuff on top. Fair warning about chipdrop is that you get a lot of mulch. I've gotten 10 cubic yards dumped on my driveway and it took forever to wheelbarrow it off.
