It's funny that Phantom Pain costs the same as MGSV Definitive. That doesn't make any sense.
There are 4, and they're all worth playing.

Start with Arkham Asylum, it's really good.
Then play Arkham City, which is arguably the best one.
If you enjoyed those, continue on to Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight.

If I had to skip one, I'd skip Origins. It's still a fun game, but arguably the weakest one, and being a prequel it doesn't really advance the story.

And the Telltale Batman games are really good too, though obviously very different.

If PS 4 games can be played on PS5, why would one pay more for the P5 games? I should know this, but I have only Played GOW on my PS5 so far.

Maybe because the ps5 version is optimized to work better ?

I don't have ps5 but lot of ps5 games will even have more features and improved graphics that can only be handled with the ps5 stronger processor. For example comparing nba 2k23 ps4 vs ps5. When games like tekken 8 and street fighter 6 come out, I think I would prefer the ps5 version.

I believe that there are only 4 Arkham games (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight). The Return To Arkham is a compilation of 3 of them (no Arkham Origins). I am not sure what you mean about you don't die until you play but the games are highly rated. My favorite is Arkham City (PS3) that had a 96 metacritic score. I have the original versions and not the Remastered compilation of Asylum and City. I would definitely start with Arkham Asylum.
Thanks!

Please recommend some games with local co-op and appropriate for playing with a 13 y/o on family game nights. Thanks.
Rayman Legends, Overcooked, Lara Croft and the X of Y (Temple of Osiris is good, but we enjoyed the first one, Guardian of Light, even more).

Not directly related to this but which one of the 37 Batman "Arkham" games is the one to get? My understanding one Batman is one of those games you don't die until you play and the others are just so-so.

And yes, I realize this is "the collection" but that is not my question.

Besides the ones that everyone else has mentioned, I would get the Hazelight Bundle. It has 2 co-op games where you have to work together to move the story forward. It Takes Two and A Way Out. I think It Takes Two is appropriate for your 13 y/o. Maybe wait a couple years to do A Way Out.

Paid $2 for PP disc a while ago, tempted to pay $4 just for the prologue

The unfortunate reality of Sony is that they upcharge for upscaled versions of their games. If you don't get the PS5 version of a game, you will be playing a game with lower resolution/framerate/optimization than its "premium" counterpart. This is akin to buying a pc game but having to pay more money to play on a certain resolution or framerate. It sucks but that's how Sony does.

I heard you can't install ps5 games on external hard drive but you can ps4 games even using a ps5 so I think that's a plus
