Yep. Most fungal communities on woodchips are decomposers, not pathogenic.

Newbie here - what can you do with moldy mulch? Can you use it somewhere or just return them? TIA
Use it like normal. The white mold isn't harmful to plants and should go away once it dries up from exposure to the the sun and not being in a sealed bag.

You can just remove the white mold if you don't want to see it.

The inside of a mulch bag that's left outside is the perfect environment for mold growth. You have moist decomposing material that is being heated by the sun.

Y'all think these are sourced at the same place and just branded differently (Lowes vs home depot vs etc.)?

I buy about 100 bags of mulch a year. Never had mold once. Maybe lucky. Maybe area I live. I personally think the claims are exaggerated.

FYI- Rumor has it that HD will have their Spring Sale (or whatever they are going to call it) starting in a week or so (1st to 2nd week of April). They'll more than likely have Vigoro for $2 a bag (approx) to match what Lowe's is doing with their particular brands.

I was told by a store employee that the tell tale sign that it's close is when you see a huge new shipment and pile of mulch that is stocked. The inventory checker online helps also.

In Texas Home Depot does have a $2 bag sale right now on Texas Native hardwood mulch, it only comes in a dark brown color.

You can use it as mulch, but visually you may see the mold which isn't appealing, and I suppose the mold could spread further, but in my experience not so much. Once it dries out it is usually fine.

It's not like the entire bag is going to be moldy, rather there are usually some spots of white mold. Just check the bags as he had suggested and grab the best looking ones. Your not going to return a bag of $2-3 mulch after you have already brought it home and opened it.

I'm not so sure about that. I'm watching a documentary on HBO that says otherwise.
Look toward the light.

Its most likely mycelium spores, which are perfectly fine. If its actual mold it wont survive the heat outdoors anyway as mulch gets really hot

Just hope it doesn't result in stinkhorns. I was cursed with those after putting down some mulch that apparently had fungus. A stinkhorn, for those who don't know, is a massive, phallic-looking mushroom (*ahem*) that produces the worst smell I've ever come across. When it dies, it basically melts and gets into any porous surfaces (a brick garden border, for example). There's nothing you can do except immediately dig out everything within maybe 2 feet of it and hope the spores haven't already spread.

I got 6 bags of these from HD the other day and I'm gonna return 3.
These are not evenly chopped up and there are lots of big 6" chunks of colored wood you can still see the lighter colors of the wood.
I've used the ones from Lowe's and they are much better evenly cut up and color is even throughout the pieces. Plus no big chunks pieces of wood.

I just picked up 10 bags of LOWES premium 2 cubic feet mulch for $2 per bag in Lansing MI. Walmart has raised their price to $2.50 but I have found bits of plastic and other trash in their bags of mulch.
