I don't want to have mean-spirited slickdeal slugfest over which vendor is better than another, but I would like a constructive pro and con type discussion between goHardDrive and ServerPartDeals.
Is this 99 dollar 14TB model Manufacture recert or just regular refurb? I see this model has 5 year warranty.
I like ServerpartDeal website because it does list very plainly if product is Manufacture recert by WD, but I didn't see that when I just visited goHardDrive site.
Again, most of us just want to hear other SlickDeal users experience with both companies, and anything you think might help in buying from both these websites.
Is this WD 14 TB for 99 dollars a good deal from goHardDrive? Yes or No .... and why is it good or bad. Thanks
I've purchased from their eBay store once and their Amazon storefront once as well. No issues buying from either place.

It says 5 year warranty, but who fulfills the warranty? If it isn't direct to the manufacturer, the warranty is probably worthless.
I've needed warranty replacements both times I've purchased from them. Sectors were going bad on the drives. Both times Goharddrive handled replacements with no issues. I even managed to sweet talk advance replacement on two drives that were failing. In both cases I was on the hook for shipping the drives to California. I would not count on them shipping you new used drives before you sent back your defective ones.
This leads to my general opinion on the company: Prices are very good in some cases but the drives are used and likely sooner rather than later they will fail and will need to be replaced with new used drives from them. In my case I had redundant backups and RAID arrays, but depending on your situation you might want to pay for new drives that'll last longer. Had they denied my request for advance replacement it would have been a bigger pain since I would have lost my data on a RAID 5 array.

Note: WD Ultrastar WUH721414ALE600 has the power-disable feature. The second to last character being a 0 means that it will not work out of the box on many systems (and in many external docks). Anything without control of the power disable pin (pin 3), will need to either have an adapter power cable used, the cable cut, or the pin's contact blocked with something like glue or tape. Without this modification, the drive will stay powered off.
I mean. This is a crap shoot. If you just want to back stuff up offline and keep in cold storage, I guess this is good since you'd only need it to function for short periods.
It's $10 more now but still a good deal. I've bought a lot of refurb server pulls, and while none of them have failed, the Toshibas have been solid for me. I'll take another. I don't put anything on them that I couldn't lose and redownload. Movies, downloads folder. Media. etc. Back up your documents and pictures. Even old rarely played games, so when I need them I could just run them or copy them quickly back to the SSD. I already have two EXOS drives i'll mix it up with this.
*Sadly the site is not loading up my amazon pay correctly. Paypal works.

A few points:
-- Both $100 and $110 (the current price) are the cheapest we've ever seen for 14TB drives.
-- the WD HC 520 has to be incorrectly labeled, and is actually a HC 530, since WD didn't make 520's in 14TB. (Either that, or the 14TB listing is wrong, but the model number confirms that it's 14TB.)
-- That's actually a good thing, since with each new version, they get slightly faster and slightly more efficient. It also makes it likely to be newer and have less datacenter use.
- If the model number is correct, this drive has the power disable feature (based on the second to last digit being a "0", rather than an "L" for legacy). If you have an older system or power supply, it MIGHT not work out of the box as is. But a cheap ($5-ish) power adapter (or some kapton tape on the third pin of the connection) will make it work fine. So, if you've already gotten one, and it's not working, don't assume that it's broken.
I'm surprised that goharddrive didn't mention the power disable feature, since it's important to know about, given that it can completely disable the drive on most older systems! Then again, they have it incorrectly listed as an HC520 (which may or may not have this feature), so they may not have realized.
At either price, I'd jump on this deal - if I didn't already have a 12TB HC 520 sitting on my shelf unused!
