So the first post was due to the user's USB enclosure that somehow negotiated SATA I speeds. Connecting it directly to the mobo should result in it running at SATA III speeds.

The second post applies to all Red Plus / shucked drives. Basically they are all 7200 rpm drives but the firmware caps the speed to "5400rpm level". This is not new to this model.

However, from a warranty/performance perspective, if you don't need an external drive, I think the 20TB Seagate X20 at $290 is a better deal given the 5 year warranty and not having to deal with shucked warranty annoyances.
The poster on the first link was getting capped at 160mb/s on one and 170mb/s on another shucked and 230mb/s in the enclosure and said the drives "thump" every 5 seconds out of the enclosure.

Idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just thought I'd share because it seems like people are reporting atypical performance when shucking the drive.
Tbh, 210-230mb/sec seems about right for this gen of drive in real world file copy... what were you expecting? Hdd platters do not have the same speed read and write end to end like ssd...

I was googling if this was shuckable…

Looks like some users reporting ~30% slower speeds when it's outside of the HDD enclosure.

Some of the drives sleep/park times are too aggressive. Would be nice if someone had more technical details..

And if internal needed, Costco has 18TB hub drives on sale with included 3 year data rescue. Still backup on cloud, esp for raid systems. If drives don't die, actually drivers /software setup become obsolete and unsupported unless buying big names and constantly upgrading/dancing to avoid obsolescence.
