That "junk" is palm oil, which helps it spread more easily. The ingredient list is peanuts, palm oil, salt.

Exactly! Some people have decided that the potential harm to their health, from ingesting palm oil, is not worth the 'benefit' of spreadable peanut butter.

On what basis? Just because it has fat and calories? Have you ever tried eating a serving of nut butter or anything with real fat in it and see how long you can go without eating? 100 calories of Cheese Itz or some other refined carb that's low in fat will leave you starving 1.5 hours later. But real fat and protein will keep you feeling full for much longer thus resulting in fewer calories consumed throughout the day. Of course things like nut butters contain nutrients to support a healthy body.

Carbs= hungry in 1 hour
Protein = hungry in 2 hours
Real fat= hungry in 4 hours

Combo the above and be completely full from meal to meal.

TLDR. Nut butters wont make you obese. Empty calories will

Thanks OP! Glad I waited, and didn't pick up the raspberry spread earlier with this coupon. Aldi probably still has competitive prices for spreads. Will have to checkout Costco's pricing later, too... Definitely prefer crunchy. Not sure if there are any quick websites that give you up to date pricing for Costco specific items. For Aldi, I think Instacart tends to be mostly correct - outside of sale prices anyway

The Walmart house brand is ten cents an ounce. How is a better deal?

That's a good deal if it's the regular price. I'm having trouble finding it on Walmart's website... As for this being a deal, I guess because people don't know better & it is a name brand. The final cost per ounce for me was about 0.1369.

Notice how it says Peanut Butter Spread on the label of this Jif, instead of just Peanut Butter? It's because they take out some of the peanut butter, and replace it with junk.

My personal preference is Simply Jif, which has reduced sodium and added sugar without eliminating either completely (maintaining, in my opinion, a balanced flavor). Simply Jif is also 98% peanuts with added oils, sugar and salt and, as such, is still peanut butter (vs spread).

Of course, I say that having the luxury of not actually needing to severely restrict my dietary sugar or sodium. This no sugar added product is also notably low in sodium and could be useful for those under a restrictive diet. The labeling as peanut butter spread here is likely not because the peanut content has been reduced below the 90% standard for peanut butter (as is the case, for example, with reduced fat peanut butter spread options) but because palm oil is not an allowed ingredient in peanut butter. Plenty of "spreadable" peanut butter spread products are still high in peanut content but lose access to labeling themselves as peanut butter thanks to the exclusion created around palm oil.

Good luck!
Jon

This is correct. This peanut butter spread is likely still very high in peanut content. However, the peanut butter standard only makes an allowance for hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils such as rapeseed (aka Canola) oil, and soybean oil. As such, every product containing palm oil is labeled as peanut butter spread regardless of peanut content (percentage).
