contrasted to the X2, imo the X3 has the better high-end (altho slightly sibilant) and works well for analytical listening, with great attention-to-detail and clarity. soundstage is similar (the series being known for their wide soundstage).
bass is very lacking with much to be desired. i can't help but wish more were there when listening, and i don't consider myself a bass head. considering the X2 had amazing sub-bass for an open-back. that said, the bass is clean.
for build: both are designed well, durable, built to last, and comfortable.
if you're used to more-common consumer headphones, it will take time to adjust to these
if you go into it knowing what you want and what to expect, i think one would be happy getting them
It reproduces a lot of detail so better electronics will probably sound even better, but not like some competitors (Sennheiser HD 650 -300 ohms or the recently $99 AKG K612 -120 ohms) whose high resistances do not work so well without an amp.

Build quality is even higher than the X2HR.
You can't go wrong with the X2HR but if I want MIDBASS, the Senn 599 is the king of mid bass for openbacks at this price range
This is very good at this price.
I took the plunge for the Fidelio X3 at this price point; and they were already delivered via Amazon in 1 day! First listen plugged into my iFi Zen DAC V2 [amazon.com] single ended is everything I could have hoped for....right up there with my Sennheiser HD600's which incidentally have a very long cable and proprietary connectors as well, that gets few complaints. No complaint about the bass either, and if one needs more, just hit the bass boost on the Zen DAC and be overwhelmed.
I have ordered this 4.4mm to 2.5mm adapter [amazon.com] to utilize the balanced mode on the Zen DAC.
Also recommend the Qudelix-5K [amazon.com] if you wish to try both SE or balanced 2.5mm....best other $100 I've spent on audio lately....highly recommend!
