For future reference, this type of product is just a low grade acid, and isn't really all that special. In bulk *every day* price at Home Depot (not even the cheapest place), Zep Calcium, Lime & Rust (ahem "CLR") is $4.97 for a quart. Or you can get their shower tub and tile cleaner, $9.97 for 1 gallon. The acids are different but the action the same. In fact, the active ingredient in the Lime A Way product is sulphamidic acid (5-10%) which is the exact same as in the Zep Shower and tub cleaner, which also includes a second acid (hydroxyacetic).

Comparing the price per qt of each of these, the MSRP of over $7 for the Lime A Way is laughable unless you REALLY value the spray bottle that much; 32 oz of the tub and tile cleaner will only be like $2.50.

I agree.
I ended up going another route to remove surface rust from weight plates. I used citric acid and water, then let the weights sit in the solution for several days. The water has already turned brown. Next I will run a wire brush against it and rinse it out with fresh water. Let dry (hopefully before any flash rust hits). And spray some primer on it before painting.
So. Yes. there are alternative ways to remove such things like rust.
