People saying this isn't a deal are dumb. The only airline offering a better price is ZIP Air (JAL's LCC spinoff) who have a $625 fare available for one brief 5 day window at the end of October, and once you pay for the cardboard meal they serve (because they don't offer a free one on a 12 hour flight) and add a checked bag both ways, it will definitely be more expensive than this.

Singapore Air is a gold standard airline, you'll get decent food, a baggage allowance, and you even get free drinks in economy. There's no comparison here.

While not the $500 it cost in 2018 this is still a good deal considering the Japanese Yen to dollar has gone down 20% since then which means things when you're there should be cheaper

Agreed. I don't think we will ever see sub 600 round-trip flights anymore. Best price I ever had was 510 with ANA without using miles/points.

I went in Mar 2019 and Feb 2020 and paid over $800 so to me under 700 is a steal. Currently looking for Singapore Airlines in October and most days are over $900

Must be nice flying out of Cal airports. They always seem to have cheaper airfare flying international compared to flying out of Seattle.

Considering Japan has limits on who they let in the country - even down to micromanaging the sales that airlines put on fares - this looks weird. Sooo, Xenophobia didn't quite work so now they want 'tourists' to come by ... and they don't even offer the discounts on JAL but Singapore Airlines. WoW
It was because of the pandemic not xenophobia. Also, Zip Air has discounts which is owned by JAL.

Can I transfer my Chase UR points to pay for this? This is my first trip and not sure how the points transfer would work.
You can use UR points to book the flight through the Chase portal, but they're showing a price of $713 r/t which will cost you ~47,500 points if you have a 1.5x redemption card (Sapphire Reserve) or ~57,000 points with a 1.25x redemption card (Sapphire Preferred).

Not a great use of UR points in my book, but you can do it.

If we have the 1.5x redemption from UR, would you get a better deal by transferring the points out to buy elsewhere? I've never transferred points and wondering why you mention UR isn't a good way to spend the points for this

I wouldn't say they are dumb. Just not aware. I've traveled to Japan 4 times now and cheapest tickets I ever bought was 450. Bought Singapore tickets for 750 in 11/2022. That's the best price for that time frame.

This a good deal, but I would hold off until aug/sept to look for 2024 winter/spring tickets. I've noticed that tickets are generally cheaper during this time.

They're not dumb, they don't understand the concept of supply and demand. 2017, 400 dollars RT on ANA or JAL. Pandemic happened and no one was allowed there for years, now that it's open, yen has lost value, it's cheap for lodging and food and all of a sudden, the entire planet is traveling to Japan.

Japan is an amazing place to visit, just respect the culture, land, and people as if you were traveling anywhere else and it will be a blast.

Damn I need this price for this summer. I have to take my pops and my kids so visit the family and $1700 per ticket I can't afford. My aunties are over the 80s and my dad is getting up there too so I want him to see them before anything happens you know. Gosh $1700 x 5 is going to kill me.

Speaking from the point of view of someone who was sent to spend a month with my grand uncle in London when I was in 3rd grade and who lost my mom in 2019 and 2020--once you miss the window of opportunity for something like this in life, there is literally no price that you can put on what was lost. If you can realistically afford it, do it, but if not, at least send one/two and then others as you can afford it.

My time with my grand uncle is something I will always cherish and my comfort with London has stuck with me all my life (when I went back for my uncle's wedding when I was 16, I actually packed my skateboard and was picking up my other uncles from heathrow via the tube on my own). There are so many things, even the smallest things that I wish I would have had more time to spend with my parents and I would give nearly anything to be able to have those conversations and experiences now.

Just some food for thought. hug

LInk broken and when I went directly to their site it shows "no flights for the journey you've selected" when I selected the dates from OP's post.
