So, for those on the fence, here is my take on this...

Bough this for the wife 2 years ago for Xmas when I think it was $130 at BestBuy. We have it setup on the counter top in the kitchen. Ours was also the lettuce one, which is what this is from the description.

First, don't expect immediate results. They are still plants, and it does take a bit for them to be ready to harvest. That said, when we had the salad setup I believe we had some usable stuff within 2wks or so? Maybe it was 4wks, but it wasn't like a crazy long time at any rate. Once it gets "established" was was honestly making more lettuce than my wife and Daughter could eat in a week. We were trying to find creative ways to use it. At one point I think we were supplying the neighbors.

All that ended when I got a little TOO carried away trimming them back one harvest. The instructions do say you can be "aggressive" in your trimmings, but I had waited too long as I think we were on a week-long vaca and it had gotten out of control. I whacked it back to stubs, thinking it'd grow back, but several did not. That's when we decided to switch to Basil because, well, we just use it in everything.

Basil is basically a weed. Literally all I did was go to my local grocery store, picked of one of their "live" basil plants, took a decent-sized snipping off it, and stuck it into one of those grow plugs. Within a week it had sprouted, and within a month we were back to producing more than we could consume. I think the "sweet spot" would be 2-3 basic and 2-3 something else, but you need to get strategic on where to put the basil as it will block out everything else.

So, what I like about it...
- My wife and I are not good at keeping care of plants. This is VERY fire-and-forget. I just have to put in water or plant food when it has the red light on
- Same for the light...it comes on when it needs to and goes off when it needs to on it's own. You just tell it what type of plants are in it and set the time of day.
- I get fresh basil (or whatever plant I decide to put in it) for cooking, which is nice
- It mostly looks cool sitting on the counter in the kitchen. Lots of neighbors/friends have asked about it.

Things I don't like:
- The plant food ends up making this yucky crystalized mess in all the cracks/crevices, and it's hard as hell to clean when you do decide it's too much
- Speaking of plant food, when you run out, the Aero-brand stuff is kinda pricey IMHO. I think last time I bought it on Amazon it was $13 or so, and it's cheaper to buy it with the little brown grow pods than by itself, so now I have a bunch of those pods that I probably wont ever use. I need to research if there is a decent alternative other than their brand

- It does not seem to have a battery backup for the time. Every time the power goes out, I have to remember to reset the time too
- The lights are HELLA bright, which is good for plants but not-so-good for napping/watching tv/etc

I've spent enough time using Aerogardens and research to have a bit of confidence. This system is 20w which means it's great for starts, lettuce, and herbs. Bigger things like tomatoes and that recreational plant require at least 40w which you can get from the Bounty and larger versions.

This is a great deal for what it is. Just don't try to grow "tomatoes" in it. You will need a stronger light source for flowering.

Makes sense about regular tomatoes, but are cherry tomatoes also not recommended?

I think he was referring to something else 😂 Cherry tomatoes should be fine, you might want the dwarf plants or they'll get too tall.

How long does it take for this to pay for itself? I can buy a boatload of lettuce and veggies for $70. Plus did someone say this is battery powered? Plus you have to buy special plant food? Time and money considered, is this at all worth it?

never if you mean for just regular lettuce unless you aren't using their seed kits, plant food is included with any of the seed kits. I have two of these and the hydroponic heirloom salad are delicious and probably not easily available at the grocery store. I got them during the pandemic to improve my air quality when the outside air is full of smoke or pollen that would keep me from opening the windows.

I have this exact one and the regular AG harvest. I love my aerogardens. I grow so much in them and would definitely recommend. I am currently growing both chamomile and spearmint for teas, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, basil, and cascading petunias. I've done great with peppers before as well. I live in Phoenix AZ so I really appreciate having fresh herbs and lettuce when it's too hot outside to grow anything.

I really recommend doing the grow your own/grow anything DIY pods and just buying seeds at local stores. I plant a variety of flowers and then plant them outside in planters for fall and spring. I also use the kratky method when I go a little overboard and grow too many plants as the lights on these aerogardens are really bright and benefit any other plants you place around them.

I have like 4 aerogardens I all got used and cheap. Ultimately I think a homemade setup is superior because it avoids the undersized, narrow netpots the AG uses, which greatly complicates transplanting and maintenance. Building something around 2 or 3 inch netpots is better. The tiny AG netpots means that any plant past a certain size is going to live forever in that AG or is going to die/be horribly shocked by having half its roots ripped off in the process of moving it out of the AG.

I do like the seperate AG seed starting system.

I have only experienced one failure, a pump, and I allowed it to run dry for a full day (DOY!) so I'll take credit for that.

Google Aerogarden and ants, it's a common theme. I've lived here for 5 years and never had an issue, suddenly I do. It's simply my caution to a buyer from experience. Not sure how that's bad advice. Doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it, just something that can occur that you wouldn't think of.
What CAN''T be Googled to find someone else with a similar experience?
I lived in the same house for 11 years and had a cat the entire time. One morning, 8 years in, I went to fill the food bowl and found it swarmed with ants. Just like the Aerogarden wasn't responsible, the food bowl didn't cause the ant problem. The ants were desperate for food and/or an escape from extreme temperatures. Once they're in they go for whatever food source they find first.
I stand by my opinion that fear of ants should play no part in buying an Aerogarden.
