Even though this is the new version, this price drop tends to happen every few months and tied to major holidays. Military get 10% off.

This is also a solid set for those that aren't married to waiting for the consensus best mechanic's set which is the Dewalt 192 kit. I would say this socket set will cover about 85-90% of what you need working on most cars and around the house.

There are a lot of filler pieces but for the essentials, it covers most of your bases. It's one of my static in garage sets because I'm not to upset when sockets disappear randomly.
As an automotive enthusiast and all around wrencher, the quarter inch drive is the most used in the box...
As a hobbyist that regularly works on cars, this is a decent set. Sockets go up to 19mm and includes torx sockets. You'd want to supplement with some bigger sockets if you work underneath cars, but this should cover just about anything in the engine bay/interior/exhaust/brakes.

Honestly I don't need all of the other things. Just a decent socket set that's not gonna break the bank. Any recommendations?

This goes on sale for $65 and catch em. I realized 120xp is very valuable in tight spaces. I was using the tekton 3/8 toolkit which comes with 72xp.

If you need a middle ground and even exhaustive, this one goes for $99/$149 on sale. Has 72xp ratchet

I think it's personal preference. I work on a lot of German cars with tight engine bays as a hobby. I find myself using u joint socket attachments and other pivot tools instead of the static long extensions due to the angles that I have to work with. I just don't find myself using them all too often.

And you're right, I meany 192, not sure why my predictive text gave me 142 but I assumed it was right. I updated my original post.

Isn't 3/8 more versatile than 1/4?

If you need it, get it. If you think you might need it, get it. If you don't need it , get it.

Been using this set for many years. Everyday. I'm and Auto tech. You can't find a better quality for the price.

Does this set come with the 10mm sockets already missing?

296 piece is only $10 more. Is it worth it or are the "other tools" just bits?

Nevermind, out of stock.

I have the last version that I keep in my Jeep when the top is on. It's a good set for what it is, but the fkn drawers don't always stay closed. Small ratchet strap FTW.

I can't imagine ever needing a 1/4 inch drive socket. For around the house or maybe if you are just an auto mechanic or something. Seems like an ok price for what you get. If you have heavy duty needs I'd skip this
Have you ever worked on a car?

Installing underseat LEDs doesn't count.

It is. But less versatile doesn't mean useless.

I probably use my 1/2 the least. If I need to break something lose, I breakout an impact wrench and then go the rest of the way with something smaller.

But there are loads of cases on my Honda, Toyota, and Mazda where the 3/8 is too big. In that case, the more versatile tool becomes useless.

Ordered this for light car maintenance and around the house jobs. Hope it's not overkill. Pays for itself very quickly with a bit of DIY car maintenance.

My store has it on clearance for $89. So YMMV. I look at it every year but never bite. Maybe this will be the day.

I trust recent-ish Husky. My favorite story about Husky is from 10 years ago when I was doing a brake job on my '98 Ford Expedition. I didn't know much at the time so I think I was using 3/8 socket wrenches as breaker bars on a seized caliper bolt. After trying heat and penetrant oils repeatedly for hours I stuck a 6 foot long pipe on the end of the wrenches and proceeded to "explode" them all--including an old craftsman, dewalt, a couple parts store wrenches... etc. Several of them sparked as the metal sheared and shot ball bearings out at high speed. I broke a couple of their handles and sockets too. I bought a Husky to replace them all and, yes, continued my idiotic exploits. It survived me jumping up and down on the end of the pipe. The fastener still did not give way until I learned about higher energy gas torches (I was using propane before in winter). Still was impressed that wrench held up to that and it built a lot of faith in the brand. I now own nice breaker bars and impacts and don't do anything near that stupid anymore.

I second this question, I have a socket that was um "stretched" and the chrome is cracked, and probably the socket too. I haven't tried getting it replaced yet but I am curious on the return process and how hassle free it is. I swear no one comes close to the easiness of the Craftsman's no questioned asked replacement. I like how some stores have a "no hassle replacement"...and to me, anything other than "here is your new tool" is a hassle. Having to produce receipts and track your purchase and all that is lame...either you stand by your product or you don't. If the burden is on me to produce a receipt from 5 years ago then the warranty is pretty much useless. I could rant on for hours - but I'm curious on experiences from others. Granted, sometimes it's less about the store and the policies and more about dealing with a particular employee who may or may not be having a good day. Take all that into consideration!
There are horror stories about Lowe's being stringent about their Kobalt warranty.

But not HD and Husky. Give them the old one, take the new one, that's it.

Forget what all the haters say here, I've had this set for about a month and love it. Keeps things very organized and no issues with the quality of the tools.
