I currently have a WD SN530 SDBPNPZ-256G-1114 in a machine, but it is 256G and this would be an upgrade in space. Although this is gen 4, can I use it in replacement of the SN530? I have only on socket and it is full size, in a desktop. It is for the refurb Acer Aspire XC-1660G they had on slickdeals a while back.
Do you know if it comes with cloning software? Can I clone it using a separate USB external reader/writer? I know Samsung will not update their firmware using a USB external device. I am unsure of Western Digital.
Thanks for any insight. It will be used as my C: drive using Windows. I am looking for something reliable.

Yes, this should work as a pretty simple swap as PCIe 4.0 drives are backwards compatible.
Yes, it comes with Acronis True Image, however, it has the same issue with drive detection. Consider getting a PCIe adapter ($8 off Amazon) and just keeping the SN530 for windows or just do a fresh install.

Thank you for the information. Can I reuse the Windows license or do I also need to purchase a new Windows license? I checked that the motherboard only had one MM.2 slot and 1 sideways mounted 3.5 drive spot. So I am not sure there is anyway to mount for cloning purposes, the drive temporarily. But if I need to purchase a drive and the license, then probably not worth it at this time. Any further suggestions?
ok, I see the answer on the Microsoft site. Now I just need to find a boot disc for the fresh install.

Just use a USB drive and Microsoft's Media Creator.
