They love/require a lot of power for optimal performance.
They are designed to be played at higher levels, if not IMO they don't perform as well.
Some if not most AVR's are stable on either 8 or 6ohm which are usually not able to run 4ohm. There is a good possibility they can run 4ohm it's just going to run hotter than usual.
Always best to check the specs of your AVR to see which is best.

Frankly shocked at how great they sound. Hoping a future AVR upgrade helps with more power (but also wondering if people always saying "these need moar power!!1!" are just regurgitating something they read somewhere)

Keep in mind sound is subjective but even you just said:
"Hoping a future AVR upgrade helps with more power"
If you were "shocked at how great they sound", what "help" are you looking for above GREAT, especially for the price?

As someone clearly very into HT yourself, you must already know why I want to try more power. The eternal quest for "…but what if it could sound…better?"
Whether or not more power improves things, my main goal with the avr upgrade is going to be better room correction compared to YPAO.

Also note that in the threads on avs forum there is no such claim that you need external amplification with these speakers, and that is an enthusiast site full of knowledgeable folks. Draw your own conclusion if you are mostly hearing this on a deals site and from the same poster.
Plus I believe in testing it was more like 6 ohm draw which is fairly typical and they aren't even that inefficient either... and the claimed efficiency rating is fairly accurate as tested. This isn't like some manufacturers where they make claims that aren't supported in testing so I don't really know where it comes from. Certainly not from any professional reviews I have read. Everyone who tests them comes away impressed with them for the money which is all you can really ask of speakers in this price range.
The only thing really at all different about them from any other well-designed 3 way speaker is that they are designed to roll off bass under 80 hz. That is somewhat unusual but their design choice as they are designed to be used with a sub or two in HT applications so they are focusing on loud and clean sound down to 80hz and then be crossed over.
