Given the price, is there a reason to pick this over a LG gram or XPG Xenia 14?

I would go with Xenia with i7 and a slightly better battery life but the caveat with it is the flimsy build. Thinkpads are made to withstand good wear.

I moved from an XPS to a Thinkpad X1 and will never go back. If you need a ton of power for video editing etc, X1 is not for you. If you need a reliable machine that feels great and is built like a tank, don't let the 11th gen CPU scare you away. This thing can do everything you need it to short of heavy film editing and gaming. I'm over 3 years in on mine and it still feels new. Swap the SSD and this is a great deal.

Your version is this 11th gen processor? How is your battery life?

There is a huge gap in battery/cpu performance between 11th gen and 12th gen. I would take i5 12th gen (and maybe even i3) over i7 11th gen.

That said, I avoid any computers I can that is Chinese branded. Granted just about everything is manufactured or assembled in China, but the control of the software loaded onto the system is also in control of said company.

That's saying as someone that is Chinese. I used to love Thinkpad, but now moved over to Surface and considering Framework. Infinitely upgrade-able (well almost). Otherwise, MacBook's is another option.

Make sure you buy any MacBook with the storage you want - not upgradable. BTW, 94% of Lenovo is traded OTC - check out ticker symbol LNVGY. Everything, including Dell, HP, and your beloved Apple, is built in China. The difference is that Lenovo qualifies and vets their boxes and parts. Who knows what makes up an HP or Dell.

For the record, only difference between i5 and i7 (11/12 gen) is a couple MB of cache. U processors are 2 Performance + 8 efficiency core, P is 4P+8E cores. However, battery sucks on P28 cores (12 or 13th generation). Check out https://ark.intel.com for all CPU specs.

I work in IT support. Base on what I see, there are far more failure rates for Surface and XPS computers. The Lenovo seems to last forever. Even in comparison to Apple, Lenovo are still on their own league.

I own one of these with a slightly less powerful CPU (1135g7).

It's a solid machine in most ways. Well built, feels good in hand, good keyboard, decent trackpad, great display, extremely lightweight. No real driver issues thanks to most of its hardware (wifi/bt, etc) being Intel.

By far its main weak point is the 11th gen CPU. Battery life is just ok and it can get warm maybe a little too easily with a moderate load. That said, it's more than enough for light-demand tasks, just don't expect it to be a powerhouse.

I'm aware. Mac's with Apple Silicon now is the most restrictive. Can't upgrade anything. No RAM, no storage (other than external) and so on.

This makes absolutely no sense. HP and Dell vets their boxes. That's the entire point, that they are in charge of the manufacturing, despite being contracted to Chinese manufacturers. The software is also provided by Dell/HP i.e. companies that are headquartered in the US and answers to US laws. Just look at Huawei headquartered in China. The best we can do is sanction them.

Basically any major Chinese company has CCP sitting amidst their leadership. I'm part Chinese and part Vietnamese, and I hate to perpetuate negativity against my own heritage, but reality is what it is.

If you ever traveled, there even on small scale operations, they will send out questionable people (read goverment employees) disguised to keep tabs on you. To ensure you aren't spreading message that goes against the government. They will inspect and view everything you bring in or out of the country.

It's not simply just a case of culturally things are different. No, it's outright authoritarian and outright dangerous to the rest of the world. There are plenty of things the Chinese do so much better than us here in the US, but ultimately it is still authoritarian.

The difference might appear small, but it's a whole architectural change as well as manufacturing improvements (at least on the desktop side). Intel honestly really dropped the ball, and AMD is technically better here, but they aren't as commonly available unfortunately.

Lol - I did an instore pickup for this through Best Buy. When the cashier handed me the box, I seriously thought she handed me an empty box! I was inclined to ask before heading out the door - "can I open this here to ensure there's actually something inside?" When holding both my XPS 13" 7390 and this X1 Nano one after another, the XPS feels substantially heavier (albeit in a good way because the XPS is built super solid). Although my XPS is rated at only 400-nits and the Nano at 450-nits, even at full brightness, the XPS looks noticeably brighter. The X1 Nano has much better colors however - the whites actually look super white instead of having a slight yellow or blue tinge to it like most LCD panels.

Have a nano i7 11th gen. It's amazing for general tasks and people on the move. I carry it with me to meetings and it's very light.

Lol I remember that Bank of England people still use Thinkpad, and some NY FED people also did/do. They surely care less about safety than you. Lol. If you are worries about any pre-installed software, just re-install the windows system or get a Linux. Your race or Chinese ethnicity does not naturally make you a Chinese computer manufacturer or safety expert.
