Marins usually give more value than the Treks, and Specialized especially. The Rockhopper at this price point is especially low end specs - mechanical disc brakes, Microshift 2x8 drivetrain, SR Suntour fork. Cheapest "real" mtb from Trek is Marlin 5 and is almost $600, while similarly specced to the Marin. I think Marin has better fork though. Marin also has tubeless compatible tires, but not sure about the rims.
Oh no, I meant I'm not sure how legit the comparison site is. I wouldn't have any qualms ordering from Jenson because they're listed on Marin's website as an authorized dealer of their bikes.

Not sure how legit this site is but given the current price of the Marin, it gives you quite a bit more for the money than either the Specialized or Trek bikes.

But fyi, this bike has been this price on Jenson for a pretty long time, so I'm not sure how great of a deal it is, regardless of the MSRP of the bike.

That's right, I am also confused on which one to get not want to spend above 600
Though this is at a good price, I am little bit concerned about jensonusa
I do have trek stores around NC which is good for after purchase services

The Specialized or Trek will come with the service of a shop to help you select the right bike for the riding that you'll do, get the correct size, professionally assemble it, and service it for free for awhile after the sale.

The specs or saving a few dollars become pretty irrelevant if you get the wrong bike or wrong size or can't ride it because of some assembly, part, or warranty issue that is a pain to take care of over the internet.

I have had no issues with Jenson. I haven't bought a full built bike from them, but I have bought lots of bike stuff over the last few years and they have always been good.

That said, there's a real value in buying local. If you don't know how to maintain a bike, that local shop relationship will end up saving you money (assuming they are honest). Good shops will perform minor repair work free on things they sell.

I love a good deal, but I also support my LBS with lots of purchases to keep them there for when I really need help.

I bought this bike from them last year. Surprised they have them in stock again. It's a great deal. Nice setup with hydraulic disc brakes. Bike was delivered nicely packaged.

Almost pulled the trigger until realizing they only have small and large size frames. No medium.

Can the headset on this be swapped out to allow for a tapered fork?

If you want all of this just get the Kent Trouvaille for 399$ free ship.

SR Suntour XCM30 100mm suspension fork with lockout
760mm alloy handlebar with locking grips
Micro shift Advent 1x9 speed rear derailleur and shifter
Promax alloy crankset with 32t narrow wide chainring & 175mm crank arms

Love mine. Rockhopper with taxes and ship will run you about $600. Add another $20 or more for pedals.

Have had this for about a week now and if you're on the fence, I'd highly recommend! Super easy to assemble, most of it was completed just had to put on handle bars, front wheel, seat post and pedals. Took more time to get it out of the box than to assemble the bike which my wife thought was hilarious!

Rode twice one paved trails and 3 times on green and blue single tracks and it handles beautifully. You can moan about better components but you won't get much better at this price range.

Adding the hydraulic brakes takes you to the same price as this Marin. I don't have a problem with Walmart bikes, as I actually own 3 of them, but I'm not sure it presents a better value than what is posted here.

If you're looking for a mountain bike that gives good bang for the buck around this price range look at Polygon bikes on bikesonline. Marin is usually a bit more expensive for the same spec range. This deal doesn't seem particularly fantastic for this 2x drivetrain and the fork. A polygon xtrada would probably be worth it even if it's a touch more expensive.
